very bad, 3 out of 10

this is one of the worst movies i have ever seen.

so the police could not figure out that charlie varrick was very near the getaway car when it exploded, and decide to question him at length? his name is on his van!!!

he is fairly new to the area, and a woman is involved in the bank robbery, and varrick is married
but his wife is missing.

it would have been so easy for the police to do a little thinking on their own and come up with varrick as a suspect right away.

there is a funny, and silly mistake made during the filming of the get away scene at the bank.

the woman driver shoots the police officer in the forehead. then later when she is gone, a man
is shown placing the police officer's cowboy hat over his face, and their is a hole in the hat.

the hat was on the top of the guy's head, and was not touched by the bullet that only hit the guy's forehead.

so putting a hole in the cowboy hat is a big mistake.

oh well, what can you expect from such crappy movie.

nearly everyone woman, except for the old lady, is involved in prostitution, crime, or is a slut.

great job, mr. male director.

one woman is shown apparently liking to be beaten by a man who is coming onto her.

this is really sick.

this is one of those stupid macho movies where a male character says one really lame line
to a female character, and then suddenly they are in bed.

haha!

stupido!

this is also one of those stupid movies where the plot is so implausible, that it actually insults
the audience's intelligence.

so charlie varrick somehow knew that the goon would kill boyle, only based on seeing
charlie at distance, pretending to celebrate the heist with him?

and he knew he could dump his plane without getting badly injured, and in just the right
location near the blue car that had been loaded with dynamite??

and the two character devices: the killer smokes a pipe, and varrick keeps putting a new
stick of gum in his mouth every so often, when he is doing something criminal.

and what about the racism of the second bank robber, and the goon killer?

and of course the goon killer just has to call the prostitutes a bunch of morons. that's deep...a hitman calling prostitutes morons.

at 7.4 this movie is over-rated, by about 3-4 points.

why would walter matthau appear in such a crap fest?

If you go out into the Basin and Range area I think character types like Boyle and Molly, esp. Molly, are all around. They are racist.

The men are brutal cold criminals. Varrick is one of the coldest characters in film that I can think of. So the woman hanging around them are not going to be PTA types. The passport lady is a criminal. She was on the card from the criminal in the gun shop. She is not a person coming out of Walmart at random. This is the UNDERWORLD.

I don't see this as any different from the entire cast of Pulp Fiction or Resovoir Dogs. Probably why Tarentino didn't have a problem lifting the line about blowtorchs.

Sorry the subcultural world of the movie isn't one you want to live in.

I think you like the movie more than you're letting on-you did end up watching the whole thing. The hitman calling the prostitutes morons isn't deep, I think its called irony---someone check me on that. We all have a right to our own opinions, this movie is one of my all time favorites!

Varrick had a good understanding of people. He knew that Molly would kill him like he killed his partner. But not before he knew were the money is. It's plausible. He also knows Boyle is more a diplomat and Molly hates diplomats. It is constructed but not unbelievable.
The best scene in the movie is when Boyle talks to the (former) bank director. This is really brutal ("You see the cows?").

"so charlie varrick somehow knew that the goon would kill boyle, only based on seeing charlie at distance, pretending to celebrate the heist with him?"

It seemed as if he knew Molly would kill Boyle, yes. I'm guessing that when Charley told Molly that he didn't want the hitman there, Charley knew the hitman would be there anyway. If I remember correctly, Charley flew over the rows of cars before landing and saw Molly's car (there was a music cue right at that moment).

And Charley figured that when Molly saw the two of them "celebrating," he would think they were both in on it.

"and he knew he could dump his plane without getting badly injured, and in just the right location near the blue car that had been loaded with dynamite??"

Yes, he knew he could crash the plane safely. Charley had told his partner earlier that, as a performer, he had flipped his plane on purpose as part of his act. When he did at the end of the movie, he just faked injury to make it seem more serious.

As far as the racist dialogue in the movie — as another person said, What about it? I don't agree with the characters' attitudes, but it's also realistic, and it doesn't make the movie a bad movie. Personally, I think it's one of the great action movies of the 1970s — probably not the best, but great.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I don't think the scenes you described as plot holes are actually plot holes. They make sense.

QUOTE FROM POSTER selmaboots:

this is one of the worst movies i have ever seen.

so the police could not figure out that charlie varrick was very near the getaway car when it exploded, and decide to question him at length? his name is on his van!!!

(In real life, the Florida police could not find missing dead Caylee Anthony and she was less than a mile from her home.)

he is fairly new to the area, and a woman is involved in the bank robbery, and varrick is married
but his wife is missing.

it would have been so easy for the police to do a little thinking on their own and come up with varrick as a suspect right away.

(A case of nit-picking. I would like to see the PERFECT movie you made.}

oh well, what can you expect from such crappy movie.

nearly everyone woman, except for the old lady, is involved in prostitution, crime, or is a slut.

(Wow, a crime movie that is full of criminals, who would have known?)

great job, mr. male director.

(Is your real hatred of men showing?)

one woman is shown apparently liking to be beaten by a man who is coming onto her.

this is really sick.

(Some women are into s&m. I think in the movie Molly slapped her to establish that he was large and in charge. I don't condone it, but it happens.)

this is one of those stupid macho movies where a male character says one really lame line
to a female character, and then suddenly they are in bed.

(Maybe the director should have shown the whole courtship. Selmaboots use your imagination for something besides your grossly inflated ego.)

this is also one of those stupid movies where the plot is so implausible, that it actually insults
the audience's intelligence.

(Charlie Varrick was a former stunt-pilot. Did you even watch the movie?)

and the two character devices: the killer smokes a pipe, and varrick keeps putting a new
stick of gum in his mouth every so often, when he is doing something criminal.

and what about the racism of the second bank robber, and the goon killer?

(So criminals in selmaboots' world are never racist?)

and of course the goon killer just has to call the prostitutes a bunch of morons. that's deep...a hitman calling prostitutes morons.

at 7.4 this movie is over-rated, by about 3-4 points.

(I agree 7.4 is off by 3 points. It should be rated a 10.4 or 11.4)

why would walter matthau appear in such a crap fest?

(Walter Matthau was in this to show his great range as an actor.)
