I've only seen the first two episodes so far (I'm streaming the series on Netflix) and they are deeply intelligent. How representative they are of the series as a whole is something I don't know yet, but I'm wondering if the children who tuned in on Saturday mornings in the mid-1970s understood the stories. Is there any documentation on this?

No. I was in elementary school when they were on and loved them as well as the TOS in syndication.
I remember liking the more intelligent episodes. Of course, I was a 16 year old Trekkie by then. But I think this should have been syndicated rather than relegated to late Saturday morning.

I think I was around 7-8 when I saw some of the animated series.
I don't recall the episode or story.
I only recall thinking that for a cartoon, it was almost as entertaining as the live version of the show.
I was in my teens and I do remember disliking the animation, but like the stories. And I distinctly remember not liking the faux theme song, though it doesn't bother me anymore.
