Barnaby Jones beats up a karate fighter in episode, 'Price of Terror'

One of my favorite episodes of BARNABY JONES is "Price of Terror" (1975) where Barnaby beats up the bad guy, who is a karate-trained killer, using a two-by-four piece of wood.

SPOILERS ***** SPOILERS ***** SPOILERS

There's not to much to the plot of Price of Terror.
A small time crime ring involves several Vietnam veterans who met during the war in Vietnam. One of the was in fact a commissioned officer at the time. The background history of this small group of three or four guys is that together they started a crime operation while in Vietnam, probably a black-market operation. One of their members, a henchman (Marc Singer) had killed a fellow G.I. with his bare hands using karate. But the leader, who was a major in the Army, and one of the enlisted men testified that it was self-defense and the dead G.I. had come at Marc Singer with a knife. This is all background history related to Barnaby Jones and his sidekick nephew, Jedediah Romano Jones by another former Vietnam vet in a wheelchair, played by the late actor, John Ritter.
Back in the U.S. some years after the war, the surviving members of the Vietnam black market crime group are now civilians including the former Army major. Marc Singer is with them but he becomes uncontrollable and when the former major threatens him with a .45 pistol, Singer kills him using karate.
Barnaby Jones investigates and tracks down the remaining gangmember, Marc Singer, to a lumber yard.
Marc Singer confronts Barnaby just as Barnaby stepped out of his car. Marc Singer affects a lethal-looking karate fighting stance. Barnaby tells Singer that he's carrying a handgun under his blazer jacket. Singer, in his lethal karate fighting stance, grins and tells Barnaby that it won't help him. Singer is too close to Barnaby and says, "I know my distance". Barnaby then swings open the car door, placing it as a barrier between them. Barnaby then retorts, "Is this enough space?", implying that in the extra second or two that it would take for Marc Singer to get around the car door at Barnaby, it would be enough time for Barnaby to draw his revolver pistol.
Marc Singer stands up, resignedly, shrugging his shoulder. But it's a distraction. In a second he somersaults away off to the side and runs off behind the large stacks of lumber. Barnaby is taken by surprise, but he does pull out his revolver and goes looking for Singer.
Around a stack of lumber, Singer surprises Barnaby, kicking the revolver out of Barnaby's hand. The pistol fires into the air as Singer kicks it out of Barnaby's hand.
Barnaby falls to the ground. Just as luck would have it, there's a two-and-a-half feet long, two-by-four lying on the ground within reach. Barnaby grabs it and quickly whacks Marc Singer on the side of his leg, taking him by surprise. As Singer bends over in pain, Barnaby whacks him over the head and shoulders, bringing him down. Singer is conscious but the fight has been beaten out of him by Barnaby and his two-by-four wood cudgel. Barnaby secures his pistol and stands over Singer. It's all over for Singer and he's forced to admit it.
I just loved this episode. Our good guy, Barnaby Jones, all white-haired senior citizen, triumphs over the athletic, lean, karate-trained psycho bad guy. The moral is, don't let age stop you in confronting bad guys. And who says you have to fight fair? Pick up a nearby two-by-four and beat the crap out of the bad guy. When defending against evil, by all means, never fight fair. Fight dirty if you intend to win.

Yeah, this is just one of many ridiculous concepts of this series. An 80-something year old man beating a Karate trained war vet? Yeah, right. Not putting it down, mind you. I loved this series. This is typical of the escapist TV that was dominant back then.

Most skeptics are terrified it's all real and are desperate to prove otherwise.

you are so right jetfire. things are much more realistic today when a has been drug addict can put on a metal suit and fly around with f16s and have the dumb public eat it up. twice.

The sarcasm wasn't really necessary. And I was referring to television, not theatrical films.

Have fun. Lifes' too friggin' short.

Are you kidding? Lighten up, that was a riot!

LOL!

You know, they both can suck... just saying.

I don't recall if Barnaby's actual age was ever mentioned. But Buddy Ebsen was 65 when this show began and 72 when it ended. Certainly not eighty something.

How old the "villain" was, I don't know. But given the description of the action the OP made, I don't really have an issue. Its not like Barnaby did a triple somersault over the car's door and defeated the villain in a five minute long karate extravaganza.

I thought this episode was very cool, too! Plus, it had sexy, sexy JANE ACTMAN playing ROBERT WEBBER's daughter! (Webber, naturally, played MARC SINGER's "C.O.")

There's another Barnaby Jones episode that pits Barnaby's sidekick, Jedediah, against the henchman of a female criminal. The henchman looks like an innocuous, skinny, middle-aged, balding man with a short beard and mustache. But the henchman knows karate and uses it to kill an eavesdropper with one overhand blow at the episode's beginning.

Jedediah faces off against the karate henchman. Jedediah uses streetfighting boxing to knock out the henchman, who suddenly it seems, doesn't know how to block punches to his face.

J.R. was not in The Price of Terror...that episode was from the season before he joined the cast. The other episode mentioned did indeed feature J.R. and is called The Killer on Campus.
