'It's what people know about themselves inside that makes them afraid.'

Maybe I'm too dumb or something, but what did The Stranger mean with this?

example: I walk in the jungle, I see a tiger, and I'm afraid, 'cause he can kill me. What does that have to do with what I know about myself inside? I'm just trying to understand Eastwood's wisdoms, that's all :)

There's fear, as in caution, and then there's fear, as in cowardice. I think Clint is referring to the latter.

humorous example: if a tiger had been eating the sheriff (), naturally everyone would have been scared of getting eaten themselves. But the brave thing would be to attack the tiger despite their fear, and try to save him, rather than just standing by and watching like cowards as it devours him.

It's shown more than once that the townspeople are too cowardly to stand up for themselves or for what's right. The stranger scares them because, by taking action and asserting himself, he reminds them that inside they are spineless cowards.

what scares you is not the tiger, it's being a coward (you will call it civil) and knowing that you can't bite and eat the tiger before he eat you, not because you can't, you know you basically can prepare yourself all of your life to become a tiger yourself, but like the town's people you didn't, you prefer to let the police and the army doing the killing for you.

i mostly will not be able to answer your reply, since marissa mayer hacked my email, no notification

You nailed it. What they know about themselves inside is that they are self-serving cowards, i.e. they don't have the will to resist evil especially when it appears to serve their interests. They know they can be corrupted and destroyed because they are morally weak, and this frightens them.

Dumb example. He wasn't talking about f.cking tigers, the line is about what makes people mistrust other people. And it's a good line. Just saw this movie for a first time.

The town people had a hand in the marshal's death. They didn't kill him, but they allowed it to happen, which according to The Stranger is equally bad. They're not afraid of the prisoners, but the situation and themselves, as they too are murderers.

Karma.
