Come on you guys. It was a set built on the area surrounding Mono Lake, located just over the Sierra Nevada, near a town called Lee Vining, CA. It was just a set, built and then disassembled. There is an old historic town called "Bodie" close by, but there are no scenes shot there.
I’ve been through this area before. It’s just to the east of Yosemite, and in the high desert, facing the eastern sierra. Yes, the one poster that suggested that he stopped off at “Lago” and purchased a soda, was almost certainly referring to the town of Lee Vining. Bodie is just to the east of Mono Lake. By the way, Bodie is one of the very best preserved ghost towns in the west. Only 10% of the original town exists, and it’s still a pretty decent sized town. Definitely should be on the list of places to visit for old west aficionados.
“Good bye God, we’re moving to Bodie”. Apparently, some little girl in the 19th century actually muttered those words in a prayer. It was a very rough place to live, averaging a murder a day.
