shareI think at first, he thought that getting close to Michael would get him a ticket to America, but after Santino's killing, he may have believed the tide was turning against the Corleones.
It also works to Barzini's advantage to have an inside man in Tommassino's family, since if he had paid one of the Tommassino rivals to kill someone under his protection, it might have expanded the Mob war into Sicily.
It was obviously dumb move on Fabrizio's part. Barzini only gave him a pizza restaurant in Buffalo. If Fabrizio had stayed loyal to Michael, he probably would have been pretty highly placed in the Corleone family - or at least better rewarded than just a pizza joint.
