Tully only 30??

What a joke. He looked at least 45!

I thought the same thing but if you do the math, Stacy Keach was only 30 when he made this film. The weariness of his looking older than his years helps with the story. I really like this film.

Yeah you are right. I never seen someone so old look 30. Well I guess I take back what I said. He must have had a hard early life.

Damn, people just looked older back then. Jeff Bridges also did not look like any 18 year old I have ever seen. However, I think the character is older than he is saying. In the beginning of the film, he says he is turning 30 in four days, and then later in the film after much time has passed, he says again that he is turning 30 in four days. Maybe Tully's way of trying to convince himself he has just a little bit more time until he is over the hill.

That's what makes it such an affecting performance. He looks older and wearier than he really is.

This clinches it for me. By numbers alone, it could be argued that he still has several good years as an athlete. Visually, however, he appears to be on his last legs. It definitely adds to the character's bitterness and desperation.

Susan Tyrrell was only twenty-six when "Fat City" was filmed, but looked like a middle-aged bag.

I was surprised at that line -- "I'm a few months away from turning thirty"

He looked much older. And that physical feature worked for his character in the film, a down on his luck, washed up boxer

I think the point is that boxing ages you VERY quickly!
