Not the worst, but not worthy either.
It's a funny thing to see that every flaw the haters get is by a twisted action turned as a good thing for the lovers. Actually, this is the only film in which things such as poor acting (do you know Kinski has some other characters around him, right? Because I barely noticed), unfitting comedy and ridiculously fake special effects (that red-paint blood) are somehow turned into the wonders that prove the uniqueness of the movie. And heck, it's frustrating.
But anyway, I don't think either that the story is that evocative. It's not exactly the first time we've seen a story about dehumanization and the limits of ambition in an extreme environment... and not one that stands out for its eloquence either. It's quite far from the intensity of The treasure of Sierra Madre or Apocalypse Now.
Kinski... he acts decently but in the end having a nice angry face is his best contribution to this performance. Has his better and worse moments but all of them are provided by his rather one-faced interpretation.
The environment is effectively recreated as oppressive and dangerous but I think the merit lies more in the fact that everybody seems so devoid of life than in the actual scenery depiction.
And well, I find it boring. It doesn't inspire me anything. Neither as an experiment nor as an experience.
