Why doesn't Caine wear shoes?

Why does a spiritual person need to walk barefoot? Isn't that dangerous for his feet? Why can't he just put on shoes?

And where does he sleep every night when he's walking between towns? Outside? Isn't that dangerous, as well as cold, and leaves you vulnerable to insect bites?

It's part of being at one with the universe.

Actually I've never heard David Carradine complain about
having to do that, and he (the actor) doesn't strike me as someone
who suffers in silence.

As far as sleeping, yeah they conveniently never showed that problem.

Cause Caine is not Captain Kirk with 2-inch heels plus lifts.

No shoes cause he may get toecheese :p
Sleeping outside...a tent perhaps? you know, camping?

Insect bites? are you a wussy?

reply

Because it was part of the character, of being a shaolin monk.

Carradine allegedly quit the series because it was too physically demanding...

reply

Just like monks of Christian orders, Caine took a vow of poverty.

Most monks go bare-foot or wear sandals, and shoes were a sign of wealth.

I'm pretty sure he slept on the bed-roll he kept in his pack, which would have contained a mat and blanket.

In the time period of the show, most of the west was undeveloped, so the "danger" factor wasn't as high.

And people how follow martial disciplines can usually reach a point in meditation where they're pretty impervious to temperature or discomfort.

Hi

Why doesn't Caine wear shoes?
I've only got season one on DVD (I've seen the rest but not recently enough to accurately comment), and in that he is quite often seen either wearing or carrying (attached to his bag) boots.

So you are saying he was quite primitive, and not very intelligent after all then? LOL

My older sister used to go barefoot as much as possible, and she used to mess with my head by going "Watch this..." and jabbing the bottoms of her feet with needles, broken glass, etc. When you go barefoot all the time, you quickly develop thick callouses that might was well be a quarter inch of leather.

reply

Except that shoes were invented long before 1873 so I am not sure what the significance of your comment is.

Going barefoot certainly worked for the character, who apparently grew up never wearing shoes. It also worked for David, as I've read he preferred going barefoot.

I have an uncle who always goes barefoot. In fact I was shocked when he showed up at a funeral wearing shoes. He even lays concrete with barefeet and that stuff cause cause chemical burns.

Oh he lives in Missouri which has snow and ice in the winter. He'll still barefoot most of the time.

The original pilot begins with Caine walking across the desert wearing shoes, definitely a necessity under the circumstances. The character continued to wear them until "The Soul is the Warrior," in which he walks through a pit of rattlesnakes, then in the next, "Nine Lives," he is now barefoot, which was okay with actor David Carradine, who had grown up that way. Another reason for the change was that opponents were more easily injured if Caine wore shoes, although Carradine himself suffered several to his fingers and toes. Many subsequent episodes clearly show the character with his shoes tied together around his neck, a necessary precaution even though he remained barefoot for the remainder of the series. Being one with nature meant that he had no reason to fear the creatures of the American West, only the people that might betray him.
