Emily's clothes

I'm rewatching all the show on Netflix. It's just as funny and fresh today as it was over 35 years go. My husband is in a stressful situation at work right now, and he enjoys "decompressing" to a funny Bob Newhart.

One think I've noticed is that Emily never wore a short skirt, even in the first episodes. I was in my 20s then, and I wore short skirts until 1975, when the longer styles came into fashion.

But Emily always wears pants or long skirts, even when Carol was wearing really short minis.

Her clothes were cute, though I think the puffed sleeves were a little young for her.

I rarely notice such things. Like most males (and please address all complaints directly to The Manufacturer), I spend most of my male gaze time musing about what's being covered rather than what the cover looks like. Emily was - it should go without saying - also subject to the standard scrutiny.

However, in her case I could hardly help but notice the clothes and how classy she dressed. Ya, no short skirts (always a favorite of my kind), but I'm sure Suzanne had a reason.

Whatever, Emily always looked so sharp! Great outfits! What a picture perfect lady, classy and funny and sexy and smart and beautiful all rolled into one! They don't make many like her. I am grateful she is still with us in re-runs! Great "threads", girl!

You know, Emily really should have worn more sweaters!!!

She seems a bit - shall I say Chubby on the bottom end, and I think a short skirt would not have worked for her ...

I think not

Emily's wardrobe was fantastic. She had great taste although in the first season she wore some outfits that were a bit too youthful. Like the OP said, the puffy sleeves were girlish. And she wore some of those (at the time popular) prairie dresses which look better on teen-age girls.

By the second season she had a more polished and sophisticated look.

The one thing I was always curious about was that she never showed her legs. There's a first season episode when she wears heels with a skirt. But otherwise she always wore boots with skirts or dresses. I imagine that it was a style choice. I saw her in earlier movies and she had very nice legs.

Yes, I think so. Miss Pleshette's weight fluctuated; she became extremely slender after the TBNS show, which you can see in some of her 80's films, along with her longer hair. On this show, she was bottom heavy (it's also evident in The Birds).

I've been assuming that she wore those long skirts as a "hostess outfit" at home. When she comes to Bob's office, she tends to wear pants.

But she's also a part-time teacher, and now I'm trying to recall what she wore in the "career day" episode (when several professionals, including Bob, told her class about their jobs). OK, I checked Quora, and apparently most schools dropped their "no slacks" rule (for female students and teachers) in the early 70s when skirts got so short that slacks were actually the more conservative choice.

In the seasons when she didn't have the short perm, Emily was ultimate MILF, even without short skirts.
