Silent Running poorly delivers its story due to its lack of development. Lowell killed his crew in order to save the plant life, yet Silent Running spends a large part of the remaining narrative barely developing Lowell's characterisation regarding this.
I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.
He is just a crazy idealist. He killed people to save plants. And in the end he blows it all up. I think that narrative really tell a great story if you listen carefully to it. The way he grows attached to the robots is hilariously tragical. He just lost it. Loneliness and idealism in pure form.
