Just saw this in the theatre the other night. Rod Stiegers voice/accent in this movie sounded like a precursor to Pacino's Tony Montana. If Al Pacino saw this movie he must have lifted it. Some of the facial expressions were even the same. It was pretty bizarre to watch.
Pacino may have been inspired by Steiger's performance in this movie. However, I remember when Scarface came out, I worked with a guy who was from Cuba, and he had the same accent as Tony Montana. The Cuban accent is very distinguishable from those from other regions, such as from Mexico, Puerto Rico, or even Spain, and Pacino appeared to have it down pat.

When I heard Steiger's accent, I kept thinking of Ricki Ricardo, that Cuban guy Lucille Ball was married to, that she co-starred with in the original "I Love Lucy". What it didn't sound like was any Mexican I've ever heard. The freakin faux-Cuban accent was a ridiculous choice that suggests Steiger either knew nothing about Latin-America or just didn't care...
His accent is one of the reasons I hated this movie, it just made me think of Tony Montana from Scarface every time he talked, which made me think how I could be watching it instead!
Wow ! It is ! Rod Steiger does Al Pacino does Tony Montana ! It must be some sort of 'Homage' to Rod Steiger (he's a real 'Actors Actor') on the part of Pacino years later .......
I CALL BULLSH*T! Why would a Cuban take a Mexican dialect, especially fresh off the boat? Oh, my bad, maybe A Fistful of Dynamite was the in-flight movie on the raft. Boy do I feel dumb.
