which was more provocative
The nude wrestling or the fig eating scene?
shareI first saw this film on cable around 1977. I was a a friend's house, sitting on the sofa. When the fig eating scene ended, I realized I was standing in front of the TV, about 2 feet away. I don't remember moving. I enjoyed the wrestling scene, but the fig eating scene had a bigger effect on me.

Oh, the wrestling scene - no question about it. I knew people who bought tickets to Women In Love just to catch that scene.
shareIt was so unusual to see even a hint of male nudity--never mind homoerotic sensual nudity--at that time in movies, the wrestling scene became an instant legend. Afterwards, everyone I know either had a crush on Alan Bates of Oliver Reed or both.

Hmmm ... I think your question is mighty provocative, because it seems like the answer serves as kind of a Rorschach test of the respondents here. So I'll cop out and say they were equally provocative, the fig scene for exposing men's attitudes toward women, and the wrestling scene for exposing men's attitudes toward men. Does that make me bisexual?

The wrestling scene definitely. That one was hard to beat.
