Perhaps you should watch the film again because frankly, I do not think that you understood it, nor Nicholson's superb performance. That being said, Five Easy Pieces is a film about a tortured and lonely soul whos past is haunting him into making "questionable" decisions.
The talk/confession that Robert Dupea had with his father answered many of the questions that I had heading into that scene. However, it was the scene in the car when Nicholson threw a tantrum that got me intrigued. Another scene that left me with questions is when he played a piano concerto on the freeway. LOL. He seemed to be playing pretty darn easily, playfully and happened to play a powerful piece by Chopin which reflected his feelings at the time??? Why doesn't he work in the music field? Why does he feel like getting his hands dirty instead?
A phenomenal character study.. one of the very best and honest acting performances I have ever seen. The 70s were a phenomenal decade for American films... not least of all was Five Easy Pieces.
