rate the big four 1970s disaster movies

my ratings

1 The Towering Inferno (1974)
2 The Poseidon Adventure (1972)
3 Airport (1970)
4. Earthquake (1974)

reply

Airport wasn't really a disaster movie... more of a drama based on a book. The disaster and aftermath in it don't make up the majority of the film.

The Poseidan Adventure is more usually considered the first film to follow the disaster film formula... an ensemble cast, a disaster that happens early in the movie against which the cast must overcome and survive.

Airport '75 is usually considered the first true disaster film in the Airport series.

I have only seen two of those.

1. Airport (1970) - not the kind of epic disaster film I expected but it is still a very well made film, strong cast, I would definitely watch this again, compared to Concorde this film is almost a masterpiece 7/10 (I was curious if this film was nominated for any Oscars and to my shock it was nominated for TEN Academy Awards, including Best Picture so that made me curious what films were also nominated, which were Five Easy Pieces, Love Story, MASH and Patton)
2. The Poseidon Adventure (1972) - I grew up watching this all the time but it does not work as well through the eyes of an adult, though I am still impressed with some of the practical stunts and it does boast a strong cast 7/10 (and this one was nominated for NINE Academy Awards!)
Oscar used to love disaster films, I guess.

Actually Airport was based on a book from the '60s and filmed in 1969, so not really a '70s film. But anyway:
1. Poseidon Adventure
2. Airport-the critics hated it; the audience loved it.
3. Towering Inferno--this came out when WTC first opened.
4. Earthquake in Sensurround. Yes, I actually saw it in a theater and they had these speakers crank out a loud noise that made vibrations whenever they had an earthquake scene.

reply

1. The Towering Inferno
2. Airport
3. The Poseidon Adventure (I would rate this higher, but Gene Hackman irritates the heck out of me)
4. Earthquake

the character or hackman in general?

reply

Both. There have been a few movies where I've been okay with Hackman, but he generally rubs me the wrong way and Rev Scott is one of the worst. Ernest Borgnine's Mr Rogo was trying as well, but I do really like the movie.
