Why don't they make great disaster films anymore?

I loved all three Airport films but also loved many other disaster films of the 1970's (The Poseiden Adventure, Earthquake ect)In present day most of the films they have made surrounding these themes are either terrible or are half hearted attempts at a remake (Poseiden anyone????) The only film I can think of in the last ten years are both of the Speed films (Speed and Speed 2 Cruise Control) I am a big fan of both of them where as many of my friends hated the second. This is a theme I love to watch films about but can't seem to find any good ones since the late 70's.
Airport is still to this day a great film. Helen Hayes and Maureen Stapleton gave spectacular performances and the film itself was well written.

BTW there are 4 Airport movies...the 4th Airport movie was with Alain Delon, it's called "The Concorde...Airport 79":

This is an old post but I wonder the same thing.

I too do not consider Airport a disaster film. I think both Airport 75 and Airport 77 are. The Concorde-Airport 79 is just a disaster of a film period.

I loved Airport 77, the Towering Inferno, the Poseidon Adventure and my favorite is Earthquake. The disaster film genre is one of my favorites.

As has been mentioned before 9/11 changed a lot of things. I do not think another Airport type film will be made for years to come. Also CGI changed a lot of things too. I think Deep Impact and the Day After Tomorrow are good more updated disaster films. Also the modern day disaster film does not have the all star casts that in 70's films had.

I would love to see a new grand disaster film made in the 70s style today.
