Maureen Stapleton Was Simply Brilliant In This Film

Some love 'Airport', some loathe it. I personally love it, and never cease to be thoroughly entertained by this 1970 blockbuster. Others have commented on the great opening score and shots of 'Lincoln International' - I concur.

However, one performance in the film that seems to go 'below radar' is that of the late and great Maureen Stapleton. As Inez Guerrero, she was simply superlative; a rich, subtle yet effective performance. In fact, in my opinion, Ms. Stapleton hands-down was better than Helen Hayes, and should have won the Oscar for best supporting actress.

I saw the film when it first came out in 1970 and a few times since then. While it's bneen soime time since I saw it last, Ms. Stapleton's performance stands out to me much more than Ms. Hayes' performance does. I remember it better, which suggests to me it was better.

In Ms. Stapleton and Van Heflin, who mplayed her husband and the bomber, you have two of the all time great character actresses/actors.

One of the few actors in this film who took the subtle route and had a clear understanding of his or her character, Stapleton was easily the standout and much better than Hayes.

I think Maureen Stapleton as Inez Guerrero nailed the character and should have won an Oscar for it. She had a greater impact with her part than Helen Hayes sis as the stowaway.

Hayes as the stowaway is nothing to forget (it's a scene-stealing performance), but ultimately, she didn't do anything special compare to Maureen Stapleton who delivered the most realistic and effective performance in the movie. And although I did like the movie, I personally feel that Maureen was too good for it...

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

I agree 100 percent

It takes a great actress to dignify trashy material like this. Stapleton deserved her Oscar nomination, and rightly won in 1982 for her superb performance in Reds.
