so, i don't understand. where is the Dad on this show?

they never show a Dad on this show. so, where is he?

reply

Six feet under.

It actually is referred to.

reply

really? no way???!!!! that is so odd and so progressive for a sitcom or any show back in the '70s to have that. sitcoms are usually so happy go lucky, nothing to worry about, always positive shows.

More likely to be widowed, than divorced in 60's/70s Tv land. "Andy Griffith Show" "Courtship of Eddies Father," "Julia" (single mother who was a black professional), "My Three Sons," "Different Strokes" and 'To Rome with Love' are just a few. There were even the shows where a relative suddenly became a single parent due to death; "Bachelor Father" and "Family Affair"

"Kate and Allie" was probably the first show built around the fact that the leads were divorced.

very interesting stuff. I thought about this show that that is amazingly progressive and controversial for the mom on this show to be divorced because this was the '70s. but I guess she was not divorced she was widowed. so, they weren't pushing boundaries there.

now, in the '80s maybe they were able to have a divorced person on a show. it's really interesting you mentioned bachelor father because I just started watching it about a year ago. I never thought about him having been married once. I just thought he was a single father taking care of his kids who he had out of wedlock.

bachelor father

I just thought he was a single father taking care of his kids who he had out of wedlock.

Goodness, no. "Bachelor Father" started in 1957, when TV shows still had single beds for married couple. Sex didn't exist even for married couples. I think Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz who were actually married in reality had single beds. (Although, they did include her pregnancy when Desi A jnr was born)

Kelly was definitely Bentley Gregg's niece. But, "My Three Sons" were his children, and Bub, who looked after them and fulfilled the maternal role, was his late wife's father.

and Kelly was hot as hell, don't you agree?

reply

I think on the Mary Tyler Moore show she was originally going to be a divorcée but they changed it to her breaking off her the engagement.

reply

That's true, the thought being that viewers would think that Mary divorced Rob Petrie, if you can believe that - despite her name being Mary in this show and not Laura.

Different times.

And yet, the Friday night line-up had three in a row: Brady Bunch, Nanny and the Professor, Partridge Family.

Why is it so hard to understand that he passed away and why is it a problem for you?

reply

One thing that drives me crazy is women who announce they are single Moms. Like we are supposed to feel sorry for them. Look, I know stuff happens and if I personally meet a single Mom I would have nothing but respect for her, but barely a day goes by when I don't hear on the radio some woman saying she's a single Mom and how tough it is.
