Do u think they survived or feel off the cliff.

Cinemajunkie
I love this movie, by the end of the film I was really attached to the gang (self preservation society).
I have thought a lot about the bus hanging on the edge of the cliff.
I have a lot of faith in Michael Cain's character, he was very resourceful.
I figure if he could break into a prison, he could somehow save them on that cliff.
Then only thing that sinks my hopes is, after Michael Cain said
"No body move or you'll send us over the edge, besides I have a plan".
I grew very confident for the survival of all the characters.
However, I recently re-watched the movie. This time I notice right after Michael Cain say's that line. He attempts to crawl toward the back of the bus.
The gold also slides more towards the back of the bus. Then Michael lays there on the floor and say's (in a very baffeld way) "Ah, Ah". It sounded as if he was out of idea's.
Did they survive ?
What do you think ?

In real life the only possible scenarios for such an improbable situation would be:

1. Police arrives, arrests them all and recovers the gold. Mr. Bridger gets really pissed off.

2. Someone panics and jumps off the bus, causing it to unbalance and fall down, with a considerable amount of death in the proceeding (hopefully). Mr. Bridger gets really pissed off.

3. Nobody panics but the bus unbalances and falls anyway (because of Croker crawling toward the gold, or the cliff edge crumbling or something like that). Even more death. Mr. Bridger gets really pissed off.

But being just a lame movie everything else could have happened, or nothing.

Wrong, the only lame movie was the abysmal 2003 so called remake that should have been burned and not released in the first place.

The "Michael Caine" idea was interesting, but there is a better way, that gets them over the border with almost everything.

1) They managed to stay balanced with Charlie in the back. So if he moves to the front, there is enough extra weight for the smallest of them to leave the bus.

2) Small guy starts bringing back large sharp rocks, which they stack in the front. When there are enough heavy rocks in front, two guys can go out, etc.

3) When the bus is secure, they haul the gold out tray by tray. The balance improves, the bus is lighter, and they are no longer at risk.

4) Now that they are out, they push the bus back onto the road. People can push a lot - there are tales of trapped motorists pushing a jackknifed, loaded semi off I80 in a blizzard. Snow and gold can act as lubricant and wedges. If the bus doesn't push easily, they can use "pivot lifting" like this guy, moving stonehenge-sized slabs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRRDzFROMx0

I expect they could be on the road in an hour, keeping most of their fuel, by doing all that. If necessary, for additional weight loss, they could break out the windows in the back of the bus. Burning off all the fuel and escaping would save the passengers, but would take longer, lose the gold, give the Mafia time to find them, and get them in lethal trouble with Mr. Bridger.

For dramatic purposes, they could stack the gold into a wall, which they hide behind while shooting it out with the Mafia.

Love your theory, Keithl. The only thing missing is where, after they survive the dilemma, they throw the driver over the cliff. He was driving way too recklessly for no apparent reason and got them into that predicament because he was enjoying his joyride.

I thought about getting a rope and having the lightest member of the gang attach it to the gold, but they didn't have a rope. How about they load some large rocks from the front of the bus to the front in order to stabilize it and then have the lightest guy get the gold and pull it forward. That could have worked and they replace the driver and reach their destination. Of course, the Mafia would still be after them.

They might have been able to use curtain rods to grabs some of the gold and move it. Piece by Piece. If you look at a photo of that scene theirs curtains on the window of the bus. I like your idea of a using a rope. If they could find one. You are also correct about the mafia still being after them. I imagine the mafia would have found them hanging over the cliff. I hope not.

Those are going to have to be some seriously heavy duty curtain rods, plus the gold was in bundles.

I can't argue with that perspective. Morbid but Excellent point! I remember how nervous they were moments before the heist started. If only they had known their fate. I wonder if some how Michael Cains character new his fate. Maybe that's why he was getting angry with everyone moments before they robbed the truck? Its also quite an ending because Michael Cain's character was resourceful. Broke into prison to talk an inmate. Very sneaky indeed (I loved the scene where the inmates in the prison are celebrating because word is out that the city is shut down and the heist is under way. The prisoner behind financing the heist is smiling while they are all banging cups to tables in unison). What a film!

An answer Charlie and his band may have come up with, but as has been said in this thread or on the board somewhere, the original intent was to have a sequel where the bus goes over the cliff, and then they have to steal the gold back from the Italian mafia which collects it after the fall.

Original Article here:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/4315767/Cliffhanger-cl imax-to-The-Italian-Job-solved-after-40-year-wait.html

...the Royal Society of Chemistry asked people to work out a method to extract the gold within 30 minutes without using a helicopter, and prove it with maths.

Now, an IT manager from Godalming in Surrey has worked out how to extricate the gold without toppling the 1964 Bedford VAL14 coach and the gang over the edge.

John Godwin, 39, beat around 2,000 people who replied to the call by the RSC to draft a solution to safely remove the 3.2 tons of gold.

Mr Godwin's solution was relatively simple.

Firstly, four windows should be smashed: two large central windows just 'air-side' of the pivot should be knocked outwards; then two smaller windows above the twin front axles, inwards.

Then a man should be lowered through the smaller windows to let down the four inflated front tyres, which Mr Goodwin said were acting as "springs" and exaggerating the rocking motion.

Thirdly - and most importantly - the near-full fuel tank should be emptied.

This would enable one of the 10-strong gang to get off and gather rocks to further weigh the bus down.

Removing an estimated 36 gallons of remaining fuel, weighing about 300lb (139kg), "is the key to surviving this predicament" he wrote.

Mr Godwin even tracked down one of the last existing VAL14s buses to a depot near Cambridge to check his details, confirming that the fuel tank was located towards the overhanging rear.

Croker could have emptied the tank by removing an access plank on the bus floor and reaching down to take out the drainage plug, he suggested.

Those ideas are why the police is never out of work.

When Caine said to hold on.. Ive got an idea
Then the movie ends.
I think they shouldve finished the movie and showed what happened next, instead of
it not having an ending.
