Goldie's Oscar

Goldie was adorable, but did she deserve to win an Oscar over Susannah York's astonishing performance in "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" or Dyan Cannon's deft comic acting in "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice"?

Here's the supporting actress list for 1969, judge for yourself:

Catherine Burns, Last Summer
Dyan Cannon, Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice
Goldie Hawn, Cactus Flower
Sylvia Miles, Midnight Cowboy
Susannah York, They Shoot Horses, Don't They?

I love CF and cringed at the ads for JGWI. As for Goldie winning an Oscar, I think the main reason is that she exceeded all expectations. (Before the film, she was just known as a giddy dancing kook on Laugh-In.)

Also, she made a role that was a triumph for Brenda Vaccaro on Broadway into her own.

Her voice is awful. She sounds as if she's channelling Judy Holliday.

I just watched the clip of this on YouTube. What a pack of miserable looking women. What the hell was going on? It seemed like they already knew they lost or something, they all looked so unhappy! Reminds me of when Bill Murray was shown during his nomination, he just looked like he was angry, if I remember correctly.
