Anne Boleyn (as Genevieve Bujold) Why?

I see this constantly on IMDB. I get the message the actor is not really acting, somehow they are just saying the lines yet staying their own person. I can see where some performances might deserve this, but GB pretty much carries this classic movie. She's the titular character.

I'm not a woman much less Deanna Durbin, but the old-time glam-shot appeals to me.

Why not, she was fantastic. One of then greatest female performances per se.

*beep* acting is John Wayne etc, that idiot is being...that idiot.

I guess I was asking why IMDB shows the character's name and the name of the actor, but oft'times they'll say something like Liberty Valance (as Lee Marvin) -- Lee Marvin.
More recently I've realized there are subtle spelling differences in some names which they are pointing out, but I used to think they were saying the person wasn't acting, they were just being themselves on film. So in this case, I brought up why GB would be singled out as not being a wonderful actress in this role. Maybe her name was misspelled in the original credits. Anyway, I absolutely love GB, and Anne of a Thousand Days is a great movie. Thanks for responding.

Oh my gosh. I cannot believe that anyone would ever assume that a name in parenthesis means that the actor is not playing the character but playing themselves. Hahahaha. That was quite funny.

Btw I agree that she was magnificent in this film. Yet another case of Oscar denied. Maggie smith's performance has not aged well. It looks over-dramatic and strained by today's standards.

I thought she was wonderful

Did anyone suggest Liz as Anne?

According to the host intro of a recent showing on TCM, Liz suggested Liz. Burton explained to her that the part called for someone younger.

The problem I have with her is not her acting. She captured the feisty personality of Anne Boleyn very well, though her role seems more poetic in this film than it was in real life. It's the fact that she doesn't really look like Anne Boleyn. Don't get me wrong, Genevieve Bujold is beautiful in her own way. But she doesn't resemble the real Anne at all.

The real Anne Boleyn (based on paintings, drawings, and historical accounts of her) was said to be petite, slender, had a thin face, dusky skin, dark eyes, and black hair. She unfortunately did not fit the beauty standards of the day, which would have included light skin, light eyes, and blond or red hair. But she did look very French, despite being born and raised in England.

I would bring up my gripes about their casting choice for Catherine of Aragon, but this post is about Genevieve, so we'll leave it with her.
