I wasn't allowed to watch this as a child

The reason, of course was all the drug scenes which would have gone right over my head at that age. On the other hand, I would have been totally confused and a confused viewer quickly becomes a bored viewer. So I guess I didn't miss much at that age after all.

If your parents/guardians thought this movie was about drugs then they either:

a) had never seen it or...
b) are a naive and/or gullible.

"I think you're a load of old crap too, Mr Mulligan."

reply

Well it was about something they obviously found unsuitable for small kids.

reply

There is nothing whatsoever in this movie that is unsuitable for a child of say 3 years of age. Anyone who thinks differently is either silly, ignorant or simply paranoid.

That isn't to say every 3 year old might actually enjoy the movie.

But there's only one possibly "drug" scene and it's not really a "drug" scene so much as a "smoking" scene, and you see that every day on the street...

I saw it when I was five or six, I think - absolutely loved it. Not everyone would've, but I'm certainly glad I saw it back then! I still watch it every year. Can't imagine life without it. I even have a Yellow Submarine lunchbox now.

The whole movie could be interpreted as a dramatization of an LSD trip. I think that's what their concern was. John denied the song the song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds had anything to do with LSD but that's how it was interpreted and it was what the initials happened to spell. That's the thing about art, it can mean something different to everyone.

Yeah, well so could The Wizard of Oz or Alice in Wonderland or just about any other children's fantasy movie ever made.

I'm 42, and these supposed "drug scenes" still go over my head to this day. Which scenes are the "drug scenes"?

My dad took me to see this when I was 12. I think a lot of it went over his head

How do the angels get to sleep when the Devil leaves his porch light on?

reply

I watched this as a 4 year old. I watched it frequently until I was about 6. I loved the sea of monsters, loved the fish with the arms, loved Hey Bulldog.

My 4 year old watches it. Children take surrealism, nonsense on board more easily than adult. Children get less confused about things than adults.

I watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail when I was about 6 and the fact they didn't have horses and used coconuts made perfect sense to me.

If your parents are cool, the reason may have been that they were saving you from ruining it for yourself; so that your first viewing would be at an age you'd appreciate it. Maybe it's a movie they really liked.

reply

I was 9 when this movie came out and my parents took me to see it, which is a little strange considering they generally didn't like animated movies. In any case, I loved it, and any possible drug references went over my head and my parents' heads also. I've been a fan of this movie ever since. And now I get the drug references. My parents never figured it out.

I kind of love that animators of things like YS hinted at the influence os LSD on the animation but still kept it family rated. Watch some 70's Seaseme street animation like "pinball number count" its some crazy psychadelic animation, for children.

reply

I'd be okay letting children watching this film, but there is something unsettling about much of it, for example, the Nowhere Man disappearing in a hole. I feel the same way about the books Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

reply

Like others have said, no drug references in this movie at all. Heard somewhere (probably on this site) that the drugs involved in making this movie involved going out for a pint at lunchtime.

reply

Did your parents actually see the movie? There are no drugs in this movie.

reply

That's odd; I saw it as a kid but I never knew it was about drugs. This movie in fact, was where I first heard about the Beatles.
