He feels guilty becuase she was rapes years before they even met??

It's about victim-blaming. Even today, if a woman claims she was raped, some people will try to say it was her own fault somehow or that she made it up. This film is old, but nothing has changed.

Certainly it's changed (and I think it had twelve years ago, when you wrote this). Those kinds of attitudes may not be completely extinguished, but there is widespread awareness that it's pretty uncool to act the way he did.

JR`s catholic upbringing dictates any woman engaging in premartiel sex is a
``broad`` a whore who isn`t worth anything since they never saved it for marriage, and JR`s catholic beliefs conflict with his love and happiness for and with her. It`s more criticizing the catholic church for how it warped peoples beliefs to the point that conforming to their thought processes lead to a life of unhappiness. Also JR suspects she made it up to justify her not being a virgin, it`s mainly about just JR not being able to be happy and healthy because of his catholic ways.

That is also the interpretation that I got from the movie. JR didn't believe that she was raped. He thought that she was making up the rape story so he would accept her.

When he said "I forgive you" I was mentally screaming "Kick him out."

Honestly, when I saw the flashback I was wondering how she didn't end up dead.
