By this time (1968) they should have been doing a better job making westerns. This movie was so hard to watch, I gave up. The typical direction?continuity problems, (showing the setting sun, and then showing everyone in broad daylight), the acting, the directing (come on, you're being attacked by a band of indians and you're kissing the girl), poor dialogue, poor costumes. This movie reminded me of the B westerns we watched in the 50s while waiting for the feature.
This movie wasn't as bad as you make it sound. As for kissingthe girl... Stephen Boyd's character had it good for Honor Blackman's and he took the most opportune time to make his move. People do some funny and strange things under stress.
i found this movie very off putting becouse of what happened to the lady in the desert, i think it was. just untill i came here now i've been confusing this with "Red Sun" (1971). i've had them both on dvd for years and don't remember much of any of them.
what was that thing coming my way, can you say that thing again, even though the languege i don't speak, sounded so good to me, something you have in your speaking way, let me here you utter those words again, so cold and winterly in the alps outside, you make it cuddly on the inside, something in your voice, bring funny magic in my soul, even though your words i can't see, what i heard yesterday, can you repeat those words for me.
I did as well (RE the woman) but only because I kept hoping that the late sixties trend toward more realism would have shown her shot, raped or both. But no. She gets taunted, a few heavy layers of clothing torn off, sand poured in her mouth, then somehow she dies from swallowing a jewelry chain that could have in no way cut off her breathing. And no, he doesn't cover her nose/mouth to smother her either.
Not that the violence would be "entertaining", but that it would be REAL.
Only by showing the true horror/tragedy of people attacking and killing either other INCLUDING WOMEN AND CHILDREN will the movies ever break through the "polite reality" wall and maybe even get more people to decry it in real life.
This sure is a very trite sorry excuse for a western. It was written terribly and very naively and directed with very little creativity. It just relied on the stars in it, which were also very tedious. I watched it about halfway through and am very sorry to have seen practically every minute of it. Well, except for the indian harrassing the stuck-up contessa or whatever she was. That scene was hilarious.
I'm here, Mr. Man, I can not tell no lie and I'll be right here 'till the day I die
I just thought cheap western made in spain. Lord look at the horses they are riding. All Arabs or Adalusians. WHERE arethe quarter horses. Plus, I really think the Apache would have raped any/all the women.
In a way I found it weird the way they gained the dogs trust by giving them pieces of meat, but then killed them immediately. What was the point of the food in the first place ? They may as well have just crept straight up on the dogs and cut their throats straight away ?
I've always liked this film. I'm not claiming it's particularly good but I like the cast and I like the story that shows a different aspect of The West. Also, Eric Sykes.
AND --- Edward Dmytryk as director I would have expected better from him... He'd done better in his past--- but he only did 4 more after this and they were all bad
How about Sergio Leone, Sergio Corbucci, Sergio Solima and a bunch of other Europeans also probably named Sergio who made Westerns? What do you think of their work?
