what 2 actors would be good for a remake?

what 2 famous actors right now do you think would be good for the role of felix and oscar?

I would never actually recommend a remake of the movie, because I agree with the consensus in this thread that Lemmon and Matthau's performances were brilliant (and likely cannot be improved upon). However, I don't mind playing the "what if" game just to see who people come up with. Plus I liked the idea of framing this question as who would we like to see in the roles during a revival of the play instead of a remake of the movie.

My pick for Felix would be Jim Parsons. I was recently re-watching the movie for probably the first time since really becoming aware of Jim's work a couple of years ago (I was a bit slow in giving The Big Bang Theory a try, though I've now become a devoted fan), and it suddenly struck me that Jim would likely be a perfect fit for all of Felix's obsessive and outrageous quirks. Playing Sheldon has certainly given him some experience with the role of a quirky roommate, but it would be interesting to see that played against a roommate who is much more his opposite than Sheldon's current friends. Plus, Jim appears to have a lot of experience on the stage as well. I saw clips of him in Harvey and thought he did a nice job of playing another eccentric character (without making him feel like merely a carbon copy of Sheldon).

I have yet to come up with a pick for Oscar though. I'm still thinking on that one.

With the scene reset in Austin, TX: Jack Black as Felix; Woody Harrelson as Oscar; Conan O'Brien and Tilda Swinton as the Pigeon brother and sister (in my version, Felix is gay); Will Ferrell as Murray the Cop; Zack Galifanakis as Vinnie; Harvey Keitel and Robert DeNiro as Roy and Speed (they're New York transplants); and Arnold Schwarzenegger as the poker table.

Felix is easy: Jim Parsons. He might be the only person on the planet that could pull that role off right now.

Oscar would be interesting, because he was a "man's man." In that day and age that largely meant a slob. A true remake would reimagine Oscar as today's man's man. With that in mind, I'd go away from the Matthau type to...Ryan Gosling.

A traditional "Oscar" type would be Seth Rogan. He could do the annoying slob part well.

Paul Giamatti for Felix, and Thomas Haden Church for Oscar. See the film Sideways for reference.
Or perhaps, Steve Carell as Felix, and Louis C.K. as Oscar.
Fun Fact - James L. Brooks stated that Jack Nicholson is the only actor who could successfully play both Felix and Oscar.
Which, in my opinion, he has - Garrett Breedlove in Terms of Endearment is essentially Oscar Madison, while Melvin Udall in As Good As It Gets, is basically Felix Ungar.
