Favorite lines/scenes from the film?

Mine are (some quotes may not be word-for-word perfect):

"He's so nervous he wears a seatbelt at a drive-in movie"!

Or, worried that Felix may have overdosed on tablets, Oscar says...

"They may have been vitamin pills. He could be the healthiest one in the room"!

When Oscar is trying to relax a very tense Felix...

"You're the only man in the world with clenched hair"!

Or...

FELIX: "In other words you want me to move out?"

OSCAR: "No not in *other* words...those are the perfect words"!!

Brilliant script to a brilliant film.

AS THE POKER PLAYERS LEAVE

MURRAY (re-entering the apartment): You sure?

OSCAR: I'm sure.

MURRAY (loudly, to Felix): Good night, Felix. Get some rest. Things will look a lot better tomorrow. (To Oscar, sotto voice) Take away his belt and shoe laces.

reply

Felix (regarding plans to join the Pigeon sisters in their apartment): I can't go up there. I cried in front of them.
Oscar: And they loved it! I'm thinking of getting hysterical.

Don't remember if this is from the movie or the tv show:

Felix (after Oscar tells him how he was better off living alone): Oh really? When I arrived I found you huddled in the corner eating gray spaghetti with a pair of tweezers.

And ... I don't think this was mentioned yet ... the FU and the corn flakes

You know me. I'm just like you. It's two in the morning and I don't know nobody.

reply

I'm not sure whether these have been mentioned but one of my favourite scenes happens at the very start when you see Felix trying to commit suicide by jumping out a window - only he struggles to actually open the window!

Felix: ''You're crazy. I'm a neurotic nut but you're crazy!''

Another favourite was when Oscar throws Felix's food against the wall and says something like ''Remove that spaghetti off my poker table'' And Felix starts to laugh and says something like: ''It's not spaghetti. It's linguine!'' Or something like that! I can't remember it properly! It's been a few months since I last seen it! Haha!

Jack Lemmon. You absolute GOD!

reply

"It's not spaghetti, it's LINGUINE."

OSCAR THROWS THE PLATE AGAINST THE KITCHEN WALL

"Now it's GARBAGE."

QUOTE: "MURRAY (loudly, to Felix): Good night, Felix. Get some rest. Things will look a lot better tomorrow. (To Oscar, sotto voice) Take away his belt and shoe laces. "

I laughed so hard at that I snorted twice. :)

Just saw the movie in it's entirety for the first time. Fantastic film. Gonna have to buy the dvd.

reply

Oscar answers the phone "Hello Divorced broke and sloppy"

Also another one is

It linguine...Oscar then picks up the plate and throws it into the kitchen where the plate breaks, and says now it's garbage.

This "brown and green sandwiches" comment has become part of our family's lunch routine.

(enters the room with sandwiches tucked under a sweaty armpit.)
Oscar: Who wants food?
Murray: What do you got?
Oscar: I got, uh, brown sandwiches and, uh, green sandwiches. Which one do you want?
Murray: What's the green?
Oscar: It's either very new cheese or very old meat.

Just one of dozens of great lines. It's still one of the 3 funniest movies I have ever seen--and I'd have to think a bit before naming the other 2.

reply

"Yhello, Oscar the poker player."

"Murray, it's your wife."

The second poker scene, with Oscar's flat having been 'Felixed' - and Oscar knocks the pickle into the air - so nonchalant, so funny

The dinner scene, where Oscar discovers the Cuckoo-Pigeon sisters bawling over Felix and, as they tell him how much they want to bundle up Felix and care for him, Oscar stares fixedly and swigs at one of the girl's drinks. The look on Matthau's face is priceless.

Gwendolyn (or Cecily, it really doesn't matter): "Did she get the lamps, too?"

reply

Trying not to look at the dancer in the club...great...

"I gotta go down my own road."

reply

My favorite underrated quote is when Felix is showing the Pigeon sisters a photo of his kids (the dialog is approximated):

Felix: That's the worst part about divorce right there.
Sister: Oh, childhood sweethearts.
Felix, disturbed: Those are my kids!!

R.I.P. Jack Lemmon.

reply

Felix: Im Going to the John.

Oscar: Alone???

Felix: I always go alone. w..h...y..?

I love that

reply

Speed: Um, what does it cost me to play again?

Murray: A dollar and a quarter, a dollar and a quarter, for God's sake pay attention!

Everyone starts telling them to calm down.

Murray: I'm sorry, I can't help it he makes me nervous!

Speed: I make you nervous, you make me nervous, you make everybody nervous!

Murray: I'm sorry, forgive me, I'll kill myself!

Oscar: MURRAYYYYYY!!!!

Murray: I'm sorry! (bows his head in shame)

OMG I always laugh my ass off in that scene.

That's my favourite...any more, and I'd be here all day haha

Felix: "Who threw a pickle on the floor?"

I also love all of the poker game conversation.

(Oscar, Gwendolin, and Cecily are laughing and having a great time)

Felix: "They say it may rain tomorrow."

(silence)

what are you, some kind of a health nut?
Eat, Murry Eat!

I don't think anyone has mentioned the scene toward the beginning where they're discussing where Felix might have gone, and the doorbell rings. They immediately start arguing among themselves about how to act around Felix, while Oscar grows visibly more frustrated, until he finally says "Are you through? 'Cus he already could'a hung himself in hall! Vinnie, open the door!"

"Prophecy is a guess that comes true. When it doesn't, it's a metaphor."

reply

Hands down, my favorite scene is the one where Felix and Oscar are talking to the Pigeon sisters when they arrive for dinner and also when Felix is left alone for a few minutes with them. Hilarious!

reply

In addition to all the ones mentioned (it's difficult to single anything out in a film that's so full of great moments), I've always liked the line "First you bleed, then we talk"

reply

Oscar to Vinnie- "You'll be the first one I call"

Not every heel was in Germany and Japan.

reply

Even "throwaway" lines are great:

"You got anything on your chest besides your chin you'd better get it off."

reply

Well maybe they were vitamins!
He could be the healthiest guy in the room !

Classic line.

Goddamnit, lady, you don't throw oranges on an escalator

reply

When they are sitting in the diner and Felix is still trying to scrub off the chocolate ice cream stain from his coat and Oscar says "Quit it, or you'll get a water stain"

reply

Loved this exchange:
Oscar: "I don't want you eating your spaghetti on my table."
Felix: "It's linguini."
Oscar throws the plate against the wall.
Oscar: "Now it's garbage."

"Tell your boss I said F-- You. From me, Bob Pollard."

I love Oscar's line, "and don't pout either. Fighting I win. Pouting you win." Or after Felix throws the tea cup: "You aren't gonna cry are you? I think all those tears dripping on your arm is what gave you bursitis."

But, of course, one of the truly great closing lines to ANY movie (including Some Like it Hot) Oscar to the poker players: "and watch your cigarettes, will you? This is my house, not a pig sty."

Damn, that's good writing.

reply

Yeah, definitely an awesome movie. I really liked the scene in the restaurant where Felix is trying to clear his head. That scene was hilarious!

"As my old pappy used to say, if at first you don't succeed, try something else." - Bret Maverick

reply

By far the Met's Triple Play. Also liked the sisters.

reply

I just saw this for the first time, too.

My favorite lines are the "F.U." line and the "now it's garbage" line.

No one's mentioned this, but I also loved when Oscar answers the phone and is saying something to the effect of "yes, darling, oh sweetheart, I'm so glad you called", then he looks up at the poker game and says, "Murphy it's your wife".

reply

"It took me three hours to figure out F.U. meant 'Felix Ungar'!"

Proud to be one of the Joker's wild cards.
