Possible remake...

After a devasting dud making "Alexander" with Colin Farrell, Rosario Dawson, Jared Leto, Val Kilmer, Anthony Hopkins, & Angelina Jolie, Oliver Stone (Platoon, Born on the 4th of July) is reportedly remaking this Oscar-nodded & Howard Hughes-favorite Cold War drama with former co-writers David Veloz (Natural Born Killers) and John Logan (Any Given Sunday).

Oliver will produce with John Logan (a co-producer on 2002's "The Time Machine") and former "Ice Station Zebra" star Tony Bill (The Sting)

The best cast to star...(although these are my personal favorites, and probably will not star in this remake)...

--Kevin Spacey (American Beauty) as Cmdr. James Ferraday, formerly played by Rock Hudson (Giant)

-- Kevin Costner (Dances with Wolves) as 1st Lt. Russ Walker, 1st played by Oscar-winning producer Tony Bill (The Sting)

-- Val Kilmer (Tombstone, Alexander) as Lt. Cmdr. Bob Raeburn, 1st played by Gerry O'Loughlin (Cop Hater, City Heat)

---- George Clooney (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) as David Jones, 1st played by Emmy-winning "Columbo" co-star Patrick McGoohan

---- Jamie Foxx (Ray, Collateral) as Capt. Leslie Anders, 1st played by athlete-actor Jim Brown (The Dirty Dozen, Any Given Sunday)

---- Dennis Quaid (Far From Heaven, Traffic) as Adm. Garvey, 1st played by Lloyd Nolan (Hannah & Her Sisters, Airport, TV's "Julia")

---- Stellan Sarsgaard (Good Will Hunting, King Arthur) as Col. Ovstrovsky, 1st played by fellow Swedish actor (and sometimes director) Alf Kjellin (Madame Bovary, Ship of Fools)

--- Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings) as CPO Paul Zabrinczski, 1st played by Ron Masak (Harper Valley P.T.A., TV's "Murder She Wote")

---- Chris Cooper (Adaptation, American Beauty) as Lt. Jonathan Hansen, 1st played by Ted Hartley (TV's "Peyton Place")

---- Charlie Sheen (Wall Street, Platoon, TV's "Spin City" & " 2 1/2 Men") as Lt. Martin Mitgang, 1st played by Lee Stanley (TV's "Mr. Novak")

---- Eric Bogosian (Talk Radio, Blade: Trinity) as Lt. George Mills, 1st played by Murray Rose (Ride the Wild Surf)

---- Paul Giamatti (American Splendor, Sideways, Saving Private Ryan) as Dr. Jack Benning, 1st played by Joe Bernard (Judgment at Nuremberg, Murder Inc.)

---- Vincent D'Onforio (Men in Black, TV's "Law & Order: CI" *& 1 episode of "Homicide: Life on the Streets") as Lt. Courtney Cartwright, 1st played by stuntman/actor Mike Mikler (TV's "Gunsmoke" & "The Young Marrieds")

--- Oliver Stone (Any Given Sunday) cameoing as the survivor, 1st featured by John Orchard (TV's "M*A*S*H*")

--- Michael Douglas (Wall Street, The American President) as Peter Costigan, 1st played by Jed Allen (TV's "Santa Barbara" and "Lassie")

Nope. Best to just leave it alone.

If they're going to do that then Hollywood might as well remake "Gone With The Wind", "The Wizard of Oz", "Citizen Kane", "Casablanca", "Birth of a Nation", etc. Besides, Stone is past his prime.

C'mon, Hollywood. Don't tell me you guys don't know how to make a decent, watchable movie anymore.

reply

The Original can't be bettered, it's perfect as is..:)

reply

Let's hope not! Everything Oliver Stone touches becomes a conspiracy theory, drug induced bore of a film. It would be a shame to have a great cold war thriller like Ice Station Zebra remade by such a two dimensional director who taints his films with presonal political undertones. I tend to remember Stone's stinkers like Natural Born Killers, The Doors, and JFK. He got lucky with Platoon and Wall Street. Both of which are fantastic films.

Ice Station Zebra is great even with all of its imperfections. It captures the mood of the era perfectly. Let's hope Hollywood doesn't ruin another classic movie just because they can't come up with any original ideas. Sheesh!

NO MORE REMAKES! I'VE HAD IT SO SHOVE IT! and dont say Patrick McGoohan of "columbo" HE WAS NUMBER 6! of that show you probably never watched "THE PRISONER" perhaps the greatest television show EVER!

reply

Greatest TV show EVER?? Man, you must have a very poor selection of TV shows wherever you live. "The Prisoner" was a lark by McGoohan. All it accomplished is showing what wonderful recreational pharmaceutical products he had access to.

"That object you're tracking isn't a large asteroid; its a very large spacecraft."

reply

Don't "dis" "The Prisoner." Maybe it isn't the best TV show of all time. (The X-Files was, of course.)But it was very good in its day and still holds up because it focused on timeless themes of the individual's struggle vs. the authoritarian society, whatever form it should take. Just how free are we? To what limits will our leaders push us to get 'information?' Just who do you trust and why? Did it always succeed? No. No show ever does. But it combined deep thought with some wonderful moments (who could ever forget Rover's first appearance?) and great acting.

reply

I don't think we were watching the same show.

I think Rasputin put it best when he said, "Man, those pastries gave me indigestion."

reply

but honestly, anyone who says that the show was a "lark" has no taste in quality television shows.

"You've shown your quality sir. The very highest."

reply

Uh, actually, McGoohan has as much as said it was a "lark". And my taste is just fine, thank you very much. Watch what you say about people who disagree with your opinion. Saying you do not agree and being insulting are two different things.

Happiness Is Vastly Overrated.

reply

Oh, I hope not!

And Yakov Smirnov as Col. Ostrovsky, originally played by little known but remarkably productive Alf Kjellin?

reply

Colin Farrell has expressed interest in seeing ISZ remade. He'd like to play Farrady.

Whoah!! Good spot!! That guy appeared in one of Patrick McGoohan's pet projects: "Two Living, One Dead", made in 1961; directed by Anthony Asquith.

"The Prisoner wasn't the best..."

Yes it was the best, you piece of junk!

"Maybe it isn't the best TV show of all time."

It just said it is, you moron.

"Did it always succeed? No. No show ever does."

Yes, it did succeed! And some shows did and do succeed, you idiotic armpit licker!

"If they're going to do that then Hollywood might as well remake "Gone With The Wind", "The Wizard of Oz", "Citizen Kane", "Casablanca", "Birth of a Nation", etc."

etc. my a$$! *swiftly destroys saginaw1 for making the above statment worse by saying etc. when he knows full well he's not supposed to* And no, Hollywood might as NOT well remake those movies. Just because they remake one classic(but lesser known) film? Uh Uh. No way! But then again, I guess you have and still say the exact statment for other old movies that will get remade or have been remade. Dumbf---.

reply

There is no need for a remake of the classic 1968 MGM Cold War thriller! It's just fine the way it is! Hollywood, leave the classics the *&^%$#@!!! alone!

reply

Warner's is doing it as a movie of the week for TNT. DOn't know who's in it, but the screenplay's by Michael Beckner, who wrote Spy Game, and the producer is Mace Neuefeld, who did Hunt for Red October. Comes out next year.

reply

Damn fools in Hollywood need to leave the classics be! Ice Station Zebra is just fine the way it is!!! So to all of you Hollywood bigwigs and dumb mother%$#@&*!, quit this remake bull!@#$ and come up with something original for a change!

Now here's a strange thing. I absolutely loathed the screen adaptation of 'Ice Station Zebra' because, fortunately(or unfortunately, depending upon your outlook), I read the book first.

The filmmakers committed two crimes in my book. Firstly they made Hudson's character the hero while in the book the main protagonist is McGoohan's character. Quite obviously the a**hole Rock Hudson said to the producers, "If you want me to be in it, I must be the star."(for "star" read "hero")

The second crime is in mangling the ending(again, to make RH the hero).

For God's sake, let someone else remake the film but make *beep* sure they stick to the book!

This, of course, is my own humble opinion.

John.

It doesn't need to be remade! It is just fine the way it is! It's bad enough that there are remakes of The Dirty Dozen, The Wild Bunch, Straw Dogs, The Andromeda Strain, Logan's Run, and now Clash Of The Titans in the studio pipeline.

It is also bad enough that Battlestar Galactica was remade into something crappy!

Enough with the remakes, Hollywood! You studio executives keep this up and you'll DEFNTELY go bankrupt!!! That is no lie!!!

In one interview Patrick McGoohan took pains to explain 'how nice' Rock Hudson was to him. He clarified that he (Patrick McGoohan) was very much a 'nobody' in Hollywood by comparison to Rock and appreciated how helpful the big star (Rock Hudson) had been to him on set.

I'm wondering about a remake based around the melting of the ice-cap, with Russians and Canadians 'battling' to stake their claims to the icy wastes.....

They'll have to hurry though, otherwise people will see the title and say Ice? What Ice?

it's out of character for him to be accused of insisting on more screen time, etc. over another actor, particularly one like Patrick McG.

Nope, not Rock's style.
