To me 2001 is THE film and wins hands down over any other Kubrick film. My second favourite is The Shining.

You might consider doing a thread asking for rankings of all of Kubrick's movies.
Pretty much a top 10 since he only directed 11 of them after (and including) The Killing.

I'm fascinated by EWS, but Strangelove is a most monumental movie for something that came out in 1964. In my admittedly limited knowledge of cinema, the political and satirical significance of Strangelove borders on that of the technical achievement of Citizen Kane. Most filmmakers have one masterpiece. Kubrick had two.

Yeah I just watched The Shining again last night for the first time in years, this time after having watched the documentary "Room 237" over the weekend. While some of the latter is utter crap, I think it hit on a lot of valid themes that are clearly in the movie (Indian holocaust, atrocity at both familial and societal levels, the idea that we forget the past only to repeat it).

While I appreciate elements of his other films (I have never seen Paths of Glory, though), I can't say I actually enjoy any of them. The Killing comes closest, but still isn't fully satisfying to me.

2001 and The Shining were both movies that I just did not care for. share
