Abusive treatment of Judy Carne
I have a feeing that in this day of political correctness, they would have never gotten away with all that abusiive treatment of Judy Carne during the "Sock it to me" sequences.

shareYOU MEAN YOU DIDN'T ENJOY SEEING THEM ''GIVE JUDY THE WORKS'' WITH THOSE ABUSIVE SLAPSTICK GAGS??...........................(VAUDVILLE BOY)
shareOkay, yes, I personally enjoyed it, but I'm thinking about how it would go over these days ...
shareWELL.......I'M GLAD YOU ENJOYED IT CHAMP!........SLAPSTICK COMEDY HAS ALWAYS BEEN A MAJOR TURN-ON FOR ME. I JUST LOVE SEEING SOMEBODY GET THEIR LUMPS IN FRONT OF A HOWLING CROWD......(And Judy took her LUMPS like a champ!!) I WONDER IF SHE GOT A CHARGE OUT OF THOSE GREAT GAGS?? (SLAPSTICK BOY)
shareAbsolutely, gotta agree with you there. From Buster Keaton to Jackass, anyone prepared to take some kind of physical punishment or abuse in the name of comedy and entertainment, I'm all for it!!!
shareI'VE ALWAYS WONDERED WHY MOST FOLKS ENJOY ABUSIVE SLAPSICK ROUTINES?? (Maybey cause it so S&M ??) MAYBEY WE JUST ENJOY SEEING PEOPLE BEING HUMILIATED IN PUBLIC?? (SLAPSTICK BOY)
sharePossibly, or maybe it's jusy the voyeristic charge we get from watching someone else fail and suffer. And the more painful it is, usually the funnier it is, too!!!
shareFAIL AND SUFFER........Hmmm....I LIKE THE WAY YOU PHRASED THAT. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF MY ''PUBLIC HUMILIATION'' THEORY? I'VE ALWAYS HAD A MAJOR TURN ON FOR HOWLING CROWDS........(Thats not KINKY...........is it??) (SLAPSTICK BOY) P.S. I'D LOVE TO WATCH SOME THREE STOOGES WITH YOU!
shareJust wondering, do you have a problem with your caps lock button?
"CUZ I'M A MEAN LITTLE GIRL!"
I love Laugh-In. I do know from reading about Judy that she did not like being the girl who got dumped on and that it was one of the reasons she left the show early on. She had a tragic life after Laugh-In, ironically marrying an abubsive man, and died quite young. I always felt that as hilarious as the show was that theydidn't make the most of her talent, were rough on her and shockingly ignorant about it. You can see in her reactions and certain performances how it affected her, especially as the show wore on. They lost a great cast member because of the blindness to her suffering. They would never get away with it now, even in todays Hollywood.

When did she die?
Judy was in something in 1993...see her imdb page http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0138637/
From all the sources I have looked at, she is still alive. She had a near fatal car accident in '78...maybe this is what you were thinking of?

I REALLY DO FEEL THAT MYSELF & HOOTAH1969 ARE REALLY ON TO SOMETHING HERE.........PUBLIC HUMILIATION IN THE FORM OF SLAPSTICK GAGS..........HOW SENSATIONAL!!!!! (SLAPSTICK BOY)
shareSorry to get in the middle of this conversation, but I can't help but throw in my opinion. Personally, I never liked seeing Ms. Carne getting abused and pelted with water. I felt sorry for her. I did, however, love seeing the guests, such as Sammy Davis Jr and Dom DeLuise get drenched.
shareWELL TOMMY,...YOUR JUST FULL OF IT.........CAUSE WE KNOW YOU ENJOY S&M AS MUCH AS THE REST OF US CHAMP...........(SLAPSTICK BOY)
shareYou're probably right, but you have to admit when it was going on, it was funny!
Judy Carne was my favorite member of the cast.
According to deadoraliveinfo.com, as of July 31st, 2007, Judy Carne was alive and well! :)
sharePolitical correctness is the worst thing to happen to Hollywood, and you can bet with all those left wing loonies out there that political correctness is rampant. That's why it's nearly impossible for Hollywood to make a funny sitcom anymore. The sitcoms of today are usually nothing but stale sexual innuendo jokes. They have no plot or meaning because they're so afraid to 'offend' anyone that it's impossible for them to say or do anything. But then with the advent of cheaply made crappy reality programs, they don't even have many sitcoms anymore anyway.
shareI'm not sure 'ridgerunner72160'. Judy was not "disadvantaged" so being nasty to her is probably acceptable. It is quite possible to be PC yet in bad taste - occasionally bad taste, or at least tackiness, appears to be mandatory!
The "sock it to me" running joke was hilarious when it started, then was funny a couple of times when it was perpetrated on visitors. However it outstayed it's welcome. What is so funny about slapstick is the incongruity not the cruelty. It became repetitive, then quite uncomfortable to watch when Judy began to LOOK seriously upset about it.
What would now be non-PC and unshowable as mainstream TV was Goldie Hawn dressed mainly in body paint. That she was a total delight makes matters worse! I suspect that may be part of the reason why Laugh In isn't (and probably won't be) available on DVD.
I'm sure she never was injured to any extent. Maybe a bruise or two. She was a good sport, like everyone else on the show. They were like a bunch of kids horsing around.
shareShe's white, so no one would care.
shareThere is no "political correctness".
It's just a straw man to blame because you are living in the past.
Television especially is less "politically correct" than ever - you can say or do just about anything on the right cable channel.

When I read the line 'There is no "political correctness"' I thought "what a clueless fool".
Then I read "Americans have the right to burn the flag" with the flame symbols surrounding "US" and I knew where this was coming from. I just laughed.
Now it's seven years later, and this little turd is probably out rioting and trying to burn some city down in his black hood and mask.
