Dern is such an amazing character actor. Method actors like him always have that inner something else that seperates them from the average character actor.
Besides ... he's also a RIOT in "The Burbs"!
"Hey, Pinocchio! Where do you think you're going?"
He's a real favourite of mine, too. Great voice and a world class weirdo stare on him. If you like him you've got to see "The Driver" with Ryan O'Neal. Great film, great performance.
Not was - is. He is still alive. He hasn't been in many films lately, but does have occasional roles. I remember him in "All The Pretty Horses" with Matt Damon. I heard something about Bruce Dern that's interesting. Although, born in Chicago, his native state is Montana. His Father or Grandfather was a good friend of Gary Cooper's Dad. I think one was a judge and the other a politician.
I agree that Bruce Dern is always a welcome face in any movie or television show. I just watched him in HANG 'EM HIGH on AMC this morning and he's perfectly loathsome, adding a real sense of menace to his scenes.
I also just caught him in the "Zanti Misfits," a 1963 episode of THE OUTER LIMITS. As usual for Dern, he expertly plays that sleazy guy who gets his comeuppance in the end (and what a horrible end it was!).
He also brought a lot to the movies he did with John Wayne, THE WAR WAGON and THE COWBOYS.
A couple movies of his that I hope to see are SILENT RUNNING (where I understand he plays a good guy for a change) and TATTOO.
I did not know that he was a method actor until the original post above. Whether it was his training or his natural talent, he does indeed have a special something that makes him stand out in a cast.
Bruce Dern is the greatest cinematic villain in the history of film. No one could play a bad guy better. He was the ultimate psychopath. He'd swear up and down he had no intention of hurting you yet, at the same time, he was talking in such a way, he was deliberately letting you know he was lying through his teeth.
So, to sum it up in legal terminology: Get lost, you bum.
Thanks for saying this. I was trying to read the thread before saying it, but Silent Running was a wonderful film to stumble upon watching late night TV.
Black Sunday is a must see for Bruce Dern fans. The scene where he puts his military uniform on, much to the horror of the Marthe Keller character, is unforgettable.
Also, I agree with previous posts about Silent Running and Family Plot.
Yep. Great actor. He's also great in Support Your Local Sheriff. The scene where he's in the jail cell that has no bars and his dad visits him. Funny as hell.
