my dad was telling me he saw this at the drive-in when it came out when he was like 12-13, he said the version he saw had the cartoon at the start of the movie that was here in the US

Watching this in a drive-in just might be the perfect venue...lots of necking.

It was famously butchered by the studio into a goofy comedy with a different title and animated opening on release, it was panned by critics and audiences. Only later was Polanski’s director’s cut released and that’s the only version that exists today.
