HATE Fonda in this movie!!!

did i understand right..she wants a divorce bc they have nothing in common, she kicks him out, and ignores his simple questions, like "is there beer in the house". why is she so immature? why doesnt she answer him? its not like he did anything to her! its not like he cheated on her! she just decides she wants a divorce and starts being a total bitch for absolutely no reason. why wouldnt he want to divorce her!

reply

i think because all the reasons why theyre made for each workt he same way backwards. theyre total opposites and thats why theyre made for each other. but because theyre opposites theyre goin to have these stupid arguments about nothing. and plus women suck. does this make any sense?

reply

I think that you hated the Corie Bratter character, not the actress.

reply

It's called being in a relationship with a woman. There is no logic. Redford's character played it perfectly.

Oh my God! I loved her in this movie! It's not like that was her as a person in the movie, that was her character. I thought she was so adorable, funny, and wild! Loved her in it.

It was the character, she was bratty. I'm not sure what it is but Redford has a way of making you dislike his leading ladies, Fonda in this, Farrow in Gatsby, Streep in Out of Africa.

You can't come in here, this is my mastabatorium!

reply

I didn't need Redford's help to dislike Farrow in Gatsby. She was an abysmal choice for the part.

reply

Oh come on, part of her character's charm is to be the way she is in the film. Even when she's being a bit of a brat she's still adorable and you somehow sympathise for her. Don't be such a stuffed-shirt.

reply

hahaha nice one. I don't know, Corrie's kind of irritating in this, but nothing compared to Farrow in Gatsby! I think Redford has a way of making his women co-stars seem irritating because he's so amazing himself and everyone else pales in comparison! No, I love this movie and "Gatsby," no matter how irritating anyone is.

I find this film difficult to watch because Fonda and her character seem hysterical a good deal of the time.

reply

The character of Corie is very shrill in this film, and I think Paul could do much better. That said, Jane Fonda did a superb job, as did Robert Redford. It appears the original poster confuses the actress with the role. Of course Corie is irritating – that's how she's written.

reply

"character seem hysterical"
------------------------------
I wouldn't say hysterical but Corie was always going to be very tough to live with, no question. Even her mother admitted that.
But the point seemed to be that if they could get by the nonsense the benefits would considerably outweigh the conflicts.

reply

I agree that "hysterical" is overstating it." "High-maintenance" might be more appropriate. Of course, this is a Neil Simon script, so some of the characters are bound to get on your nerves, but at least you won't be bored!

There are plenty of movies to "HATE Fonda" but this isn't one of them!

"the best that you can do is fall in love"

reply

haha. I agree. While I was watching this...my constant thought was...What did this guy Paul see in Corie? Especially with the way Paul looks and acts, this guy is a MAJOR CATCH!! And he settled for HER?!!

Oh well, yeah, I guess she's suppose to be the bright contrast to his steady calm. And that is what attracted him to her...that she's so carefree while he's not.

But really, the whole "divorce" thing was so immature. Kicking him out too when he was sick and not sharing her food...that was just MEAN! Good thing her mother straightened her out.

And I agree with the observation that Robert Redford has a way of making his leading ladies unlikeable to the audience. I think it has something to do with the idea that he's so frickin' gorgeous and perfect that the audience feels that no woman is good enough for him. hahah. Even in "The Way We Were" when he played the essentially weak Hubbel...women were still rooting for him. hehe.

reply

Perhaps the OP did not grasp that this was a comedy. Of course Corie is acting irrationally and hysterically.

reply

I thought Jane Fonda was great in this giving a hysterical and care free performance. Although her character did overreact towards the end she was still likeable due to her caring personality which came through in the end.

"I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not".

reply

How can you not think Jane Fonda is amazing in this movie when you see her dance around in that pink dress in the restaurant scene. She is supposed to be a free spirit, get over it.

reply

That pink dress was adorable.
