Robert Reed

I remember when I was a kid Robert Reed was on quite a few episodes of Mannix. He was some sort of detective with the police dept. or something. I was just a little kid, but I remember thinking "What is Mike Brady doing here? I thought he was an architect." LOL

I'll tell you what's ironic. Back in the '70s Florence Henderson, Susan St. James and the actress who played Lou Ann Poovie were all pretty hot looking. And they were the TV wives and girlfriend of three guys who wouldn't have been the least bit interested in them in real life. Hollywood is definitely the land of fruits and nuts.

so what?

If you don't know the difference between normal and homosexual behavior there's not much I can say.

He was under contract to Paramount, which made both shows. Apparently Reed HATED doing "The Brady Bunch." I guess playing a serious cop gave him a chance to flex some acting muscles.

reply

He really was much more of a serious actor. Although he was okay as Mike Brady, I do think he was miscast. He just wasn't right for the part.

reply

He was great on "The Defenders" with E.G. Marshall, a show with more awards than ratings.

reply

He was pretty good on Rich Man, Poor Man, a mini series from the late '70s that was broadcast on ABC. He played the part of kind of a middle aged rich playboy named Teddy Boylan who was sleeping with one of the two main character's girlfriend. I kept waiting for him to revert back to Mike Brady form and tell the girl that although he found her quite attractive, he only had eyes for his wife Carol. Oh, and on the way out would she tell Alice that Peter wants porkchops and applesauce for breakfast.

He was great in any project that he was in.

He didn't 'hate' doing The Brady Bunch but what he did hate was fighting
tooth & nail with the show's writers and it's creator Sherwood Schwartz & son Lloyd.

Reed had to practically 'beg' them for better and mroe realistic scripts but rarely did he get his way. He did direct a few shows which were good and he did act as a part tiem father on the set to the kids.

I've yet to see The Defenders but I was totally taken by surprise when seeing him on MANNIX. I've stated that up until a few weeks ago, Ihadn;t seen the series, except for ONE episode..the last one.

So, to see him playing Tobias, without even a 'hint' of Mike Brady present, just goes to show he was a good actor. Watch the 1976 John Travolta ABC-TV film "The Boy In The Plastic Bubble', he should have got an Emmy for that one (as well as Travolta).

Go for it or just be a gopher!

In the Defenders he was phenomenal! Week after week he held his own with Robert Duvall,Martin Sheen,Gene Hackman,Robert Loggia,William Shatner and the cream of the New York acting community...Then its the seventies and he's stuck in LA, deeply in the closet and super popular doing trash that didn't use an ounce of his potential. Thank God for Mannix where he could flex some of his acting muscles

I just caught the first Robert Reed/Adam Tobias episode, "The Girl Who Came in with the Tide" from February 1969 (pre-BRADY BUNCH). Reed was excellent and enjoyed a lot of screen time. Even in this first appearance, Connors and Reed have a great chemistry and play off each other well. It's no wonder they kept Reed as a recurring guest star.

The Reed movie I want to see is the one that teams him with Andy Griffith and William Shatner. It sounds like a legendary casting coup for whomever corralled these three titanic talents.

He was OK as Mike to me, I had no idea he resented the role that made him famous. I heard the same about Christopher Plummer as the Captain in The Sound of Music.

Yes, and up until now I had never realized he was doing both shows concurrenty, on two different networks (ABC and CBS), which was a rarity for teevision in those days.

I remember robert reed in an episode of medical center....he had a sex change operation....big change from the brady dad

reply

Acting straight gave him plenty of opportunity to flex his acting muscles. ;-)

Not only was he often moonlighting on Mannix, Mike Brady's living room made an appearance on Mannix one time as well! In the episode, Who's Sylvia, Joe Mannix walks into a lovely Tudor style home where a party is going on. The living room is the Brady Bunch's!
I just saw this last night and had to smile.

But if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao
You ain't going to make it with anyone anyhow

reply

Yes, the Bewitched house has been used in a number of other shows and films. So has Tony Nelson's from I Dream of Jeanie.

reply

I saw that episode on MeTV and immediately recognized the Brady home. I think there is an episode of The Brady Bunch where Greg mentions Mannix.

The Partridge Family home appears in a movie called Watermelon Man.

reply

Thanks for the heads up on Watermelon Man. Now I must find the movie and check it out.
I love spotting sets and props from movies and TV shows. It's always fun.
In the case of Mannix, it was a pleasant surprise!

reply

Chris Knight ( Peter Brady) was on Mannix as well prior to being on the BB.

reply

I just saw the BB house again on an episode guest starring Linda Evans. There is no not recognizing that red kitchen.
