Joe's Badge

Badge 714 is featured in the opening of each episode.

It has "SERGEANT"" across the top of the badge.

Does that mean Joe would have had to get a new badge if he got promoted to Lieutenant?

I always thought a policeman kept the same badge for his entire career. Was this just the badge designed for the show and not really the style of badge actually used by LA police officers?

Not sure if you're serious with the question about the badge, but yes, of course, when an officer gets promoted, he gets a new badge. After sergeant by the way, the badge becomes a gold colour in most jurisdictions in the usa.

Yes I was serious with the question. The badge in the opening of the show looks like the rank is on there permanently. I have always thought that once a policeman graduated from the academy and got his badge, that one badge stayed with him forever.

In today's episode, when Joe flashed his badge to pyramid scammer Bonnie Bates, it looked to me like that badge had a lot more gold than the one that opens the show. That look today was pretty quick, though.

I think you can buy a replica of the badge somewhere. The only hassle is it looks so much like the real thing you can't possess it in the State of California!!!

LAPD retired that number and a replica badge was buried with Webb after he passed.
