Anyone else think Rosalind Russell's performance was Oscar-worthy?

I certainly did. By the end of the movie I was convinced she was a genuine Mother-superior. She delivered a stellar performance. I liked her in all movies, but this one was in a category all its own.

I could not agree more, she is fantastic in this.

(SPOILER, I guess)
This is a little off topic, but maybe my favorite line in the film is at the end when Mary says maybe Rachel will return someday and join the order. Mother Superior says "If she does, I quit!". Great funny moment to end the film on.

Definitely - A truly remarkable performance in this gem of a film.

No question it was one of her finest performances -She should have been nominated at the very least.

Yes, definitely. Magnificent portrayal in a great movie.

She was fantastic in the role of Mother Superior and I think a nomination would have been well deserved. Someone mentioned 3 particular scenes she excelled in and I agree with them. She was superb throughout the entire movie.

Yes indeed! She was wonderful in this and I have to keep reminding myself that that is Rosalind Russell and not an actual mother superior.

"The end of the shoelace is called the...IT DOESN'T MATTER!"

Absolutely Oscar worthy. There are so many layers to every line she says, and yet the performance is so assured and natural. I feel as if I know Mother Superior, but also the person, and I believe every word about her past. I know every nuance of her feelings towards Mary Clancy. For example, I don't know how she walks into the dormitory and tells the girls that Luigori has died, and although she doesn't cheat at all, there's no quaver in her voice or tremor in her face, she simply tells them what happened, you know exactly how she feels about it and so does Mary, yet you also know why Rachel thinks she's cold. Totally brilliant. I love how she's so happy about the band winning and getting the new boiler, and she HAS to be totally manipulating her rival, diverting him from telling her off, and yet she never tips her hand to the audience.

Best Russell performance ever, better than His Girl Friday. It's not just HER best performance, but one of the best on film. It's funny, two actresses I don't think much about one way or the other - Audrey Hepburn and Roz Russell - turned in completely remarkable performances as nuns (Audrey Hepburn in The Nun's Story).
