One of the worst films ever?

Snail's pacing and direction - pedestrian at best, stand-still everywhere else.
Wafer-thin, see-thru plot.
Terrible acting.
Lousy script.

How did Dean Martin agree to go along with this rubbish? I get that it's supposed to be tongue-in-cheek, but lots of gadgets and bad jokes do not a good film make.

It seems every time a new girl walks into the scene, Matt Helm sticks his tongue down her throat with embarrassing regularity.

How attitudes have changed! Would the scene where they're driving along drinking a bottle of scotch be even allowed today?

Was the director appealing to the audiences of the day? Is this what they wanted?

It would be interesting to read some original reviews from critics of the time.

I agree with the OP, and it's nothing to do with being a tight@ss or a fuddy-duddy. This is just a terrible piece of film-making. Dino may have a contract enabling him to stay in town, but he must also have had a line in it that stipulated he did no more than one take for each scene! His performance is underpowered, shambolic and shambling.

The direction is leaden - oh my Lord, that never ending car scene that takes up the mid section of the movie! It's like when a radio DJ puts on a Yes or Pink Floyd album then goes for a coffee or a smoke - the whole movie just ground to a halt for half an hour! Dino actually looks great in the couple of stunts where it's obviously him, and Stella also engages in some good physical comedy - she's a sport. However, along with Cyd Charisse's legs, that's about the limit of the positives.

As I said, I'm no square - I enjoy bikini babes and dancing girls (especially Cyd)as much as the next "red blooded male" (to borrow from the above review) but the Sixties version is pretty unsexy in my eyes. Flesh coloured tights/pantyhose abound, and those baggy knickers make them look like they've filled their nappy. However, Stella in stockings looks good (before she gets covered in mud).

It's a real time capsule, but without the charm that other Sixties and Seventies artefacts possess.
