I don't know if this has been attempted before, but I think we should establish a long standing thread of what book each poster would memorize if they had to pick only one with which to restart a barren society.
Mine: THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS by C.S. Lewis.
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. We all need a little fun, and it is one of two books on my iPad.... the other is the Bible. I figure between the two of them I am ready for anything.
sharePride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Because it shows what happens when we are too quick to judge others. And of course, because we need romance.
And I am shocked, shocked I tell you, that nobody has grabbed up the Twilight Trilogy. If I were a better person, I'd offer to do it.

I think I haven't posted in this thread before (I skimmed the 23 previous pages) but anyway...
I already know "A Christmas Carol" mostly by heart, and I could become a keeper of kids lit, as I can recite such works as Goodnight Moon and The Velveteen Rabbit. The Jungle Book would be cool to learn.
I also have a lot of poetry memorized, so maybe learning something like The Idylls of the King would be good.

Since the Bible, the LOTR trilogy, and the Hobbit have been taken, I'd go with Chronicles of Narnia.
A poetry book with selections from the ages would also be a fine choice.
