'Au Hasard Balthazar' vs 'Viridiana'

Opposite perspectives on similar subjects, virtue and innocence...

So, Buñuel or Bresson?
Any thoughts?

How do you even compare these movies, they are completely unrelated. How about Balthazar vs. Mouchette.

Having never seen Viridinia, I can't comment. But in response to OUATITW, I think that Balthazar is superior, although Mouchette is another masterpiece on a similar subject.

Viridiana and Mouchette are both completely superb films, but neither can touch the genius that is Au hasard Balthazar.

interestingly enough, i saw them both on the same day for the first time and Viridiana wins hands down

Bunuel also wins overall as the better director, he creates more interesting characters and plotlines

so many movies, so little time

I think Au hasard Batlhazar is a better film. Viridiana is great too, one of Bunuel's best films.
Bresson has a more steady and superior filmography; Bunuel has made some great masterpieces, but he did make a few duds in his long career (plus his later French films were never as good as his best Spanish/Mexican films).

Viridiana, no contest. Much better story and directing. Hits punches.

Viridiana for me, one of my favorites, but Pickpocket is my favorite Bresson and that one's better than both.
