LOL, I dunno about the rest of you, but every time I watched 'Family Affair', I could not help but be a little freaked out by Mrs. Beasley. I know, I know,
it was only a friggin dolly, but, I think Buffy's 'friend' gave me the same chills as circus clowns do. There was really something and truly weird about Buffy being so attached to this little old lady doll.

This is what I hate about Walt Disney; one of his main legacies, along with all the nice parts about his work, seems to be the concept that anything nice, pleasant or innocent only appears that way and is actually evil or conceals a hidden evil.
Mrs. Beasley was a rarity by that time, a granny doll. Most of the time we think kids like baby or toddler dolls so they can play mothers and fathers, but granny dolls go back to the last century and are great for kids with absent or dead parents, or who have moved around a lot. Gives them a sense of stability and an image of continuity and kindness, as well as someone to look after (grannies need a bit of looking after too, with their arthritis and everything!).

NO! Of course not. Mrs. Beasley was a wonderfuly, sweet, comforting doll. I had a Mrs. Beasley doll when I was little that I loved very much. Her voice box was accidentally broken, so I was given another one, but it was never quite the same as my original, much-loved and worn Mrs. Beasley. Perhaps you had to be of that generation (and a girl) to appreciate Mrs. Beasley, but she was no scarier than Cindy's stupid Kitty Carryall doll on The Brady Bunch!

I actually found her 2 years ago, stuffed in a bag of my old toys/dolls in a storage room my parents had placed her in loooong ago and other than being faded and a bit "musty" and missing her glasses she still worked!! They really just don't make dolls/toys like they used to.
Of course Mrs. Beasley was evil, who do you think it was that talke Buffy into doing lap dances & poles at Mr. French's butlter meetings?
All opinions are well reasoned and thought out, any similarity to reality is pure coindicence.
During the run of the show there were two particular episodes that underscored the significance of Mrs Beasley to Buffy. In one early episode, when the doll was lost for a while, Cissy explained to their Uncle Bill that right after their parents' death and the children were separated for a time, Mrs. Beasley was Buffy's only real friend and comfort. In a later episode, perhaps in the next season, we learn that Mrs. Beasley was the last thing that Buffy's mother had ever given her before their parents were killed in an accident.

Ya...that doll kinda scared me too. Everyone seems to love it, considering when Family Affair was on it was the highest selling doll in America. But I dunno, I always found "Mrs. Beasley" rather disturbing...
