Nazi Uniforms?

At first glance, the symbols on the uniforms look vaguely like swastikas.
Was this intentional on the part of the producers ?

Nazi looking yes, but I thought they looked a lot like the SS insignias.

The commander has SSS. They signify ranks.

I thought those collars which come up around the ears were a bit funny. It seemed like they were walking around awkwardly at times, unable to really let their head move around naturally and it seemed like they couldn't move their head downwards easily.
