A prototype disaster flick
Despite the scientific inaccuracies, implausible elevator setup, and the ridiculous climactic scene at the end, this actually wasn't a bad movie, and presented a unique, interesting idea. Despite the movie's age and the era it's set in, it has all the hallmarks of some great disaster flicks we'd see decades later.
- something insane was happening with the earth due to humankind's hubris in messing with something they didn't understand with advanced tech
- crazy stuff happening over a large area
- lots of random property damage
- scientists having to put on interesting gear to go do impossible tasks to save the world
- a [sort of weaksauce] romance/romantic triangle subplot
- crazy sci-fi stuff happening at the end that most people watching wouldn't anticipate
Makes me wonder if the writers of "The Core" took a little inspiration from this movie...
