Not so much “silly", as it is dated and offensive.share
Some examples:
The premise was improbable when it aired - A wealthy man forces his wife to leave the city, and live with him in the country. Divorce attorneys were quite common in the 1960s, and his wife could lived quite well back in New York City on the half of the marital assets she would have received following the end of their marriage.
The husband mistook an idea for a plan - Oliver wanted to live on a farm , but barely had a clue as to what was involved. He was a dilettante in a field of endeavor where they get hurt or go broke.
The townspeople were either none too bright or on the grift - Basically the series is an endless array of stereotypes, most of them negative.
Oliver is often shown to be frustrated by and exasperated with everyone despite the fact that moving to the area was his terrible idea - Basically he was kind of a dick, because he would quickly grow irritated and annoyed with others, when the problem was usually his doing.
The series didn't have a great deal of respect for women - They are all either dingy or naive. The men are the only ones who make sound judgments and the women are mostly along for the ride.
Green Acres was another in the 1960s CBS Television network's “Let's get a chuckle from the antics of rural White Southerners” series of programs. Although the network purged the majority in 1971, it still went back to the well a few short years later with The Dukes of Hazzard, where none of the series leads were themselves Southerners.
Green Acres isn't silly as much as it's archaic and stereotypical. It's amusing to watch for short periods of time. However it's nearly six decades old and it's age definitely shows after a few episodes.
