I'm never sure how much nostalgia influences people's opinions of these things. Of people who like sci fi, but didn't see this as a kid, did you like it? I see I can get a used Criterion Collection (which I suppose answers my question, but still) DVD for about $20 (that's the 'but still' part).
I don't need CGi, just a decent story.

I don't ever remember seeing this before. Surprised I haven't but suppose you can't see everything.
I found it entertaining enough. Made me think of a number of films from the period it was made in and with similar styles and techniques as well effects. The Time Machine and Planet of the Apes springs to mind.
The alien ships looked similar to those in War of the Worlds, albeit more rudimentary. At the beginning I couldn't help but think of 2001.
I don't mind slow paced films. Its not a classic by any means and it is corny at times but I certainly don't dislike it. It held my attention. A nice wee surprise from the 60s
Please forgive me for dishonoring your request, but I did see it at the age of 17 in 1964 -- and I watched it again yesterday morning on Movies!. "Experience" and "nostalgia" are not the same thing.
Robinson Crusoe on Mars was praised at the time for its general scientific accuracy, and the film holds up 52 years later. My liking -- and respect -- for it are based on its attention to detail, and emotional honesty.
As for its pacing... The story tries to show a man coming to grips with his loneliness, which requires a relatively slow pace.
I feel sorry for all you young'uns whose aesthetic tastes have been perverted (there is no other word) by hyperactive entertainment.
I was at least 40 when I first saw this about 20 years ago, and really enjoyed it. I've seen it several times since whenever it shows up on TV and still enjoy it.
I like the effects in the same was as I do most 50s sci-fi movies.
