The first hour was one of the most boring film experiences of my life. It picked up after the aliens arrived, but I was too far gone to see the film as deserving of it's 6.7 rating.
It would have been nice if they had at least foreshadowed the aliens. At around the 40 minute mark, I genuinely thought the whole film was going to be him walking around rocky scenery. The visuals were nice, but they ultimately the best part of the film.
If you look at a film like Planet of the Apes, we don't see the apes until half an hour in, but at least we have conversation between a couple of human characters to keep us occupied. When it's just Crusoe talking to himself or a monkey, it gets old quick.
In hindsight, I think the film would have been a lot better if his reports to the video recorder had been replaced with narration. We could have seen one scene of him talking to the machine and then it would have been understood that all narrations which followed were being spoken into it.
