The best Hammer film I've ever seen.

I loved "The Curse of Frankenstein," "The Horror of Dracula," and their sequels. I've also seen "The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll." Hammer has always offered fantastic films, but this one stands above them all, from my point of view.

I personally would have to say the other three titles are better, but "The Gorgon" isn't far behind.

Dr Jekyll sister Hyde is one of the finest Hammer Horrors.

I loved the Gorgon as well, but to say this is the best Hammer film is well......i cant agree with that statement lol. There are several id say are better.

To save money I suppose, Hammer could reuse the sets from former Dracula and Frankenstein efforts. Not even any ghost stories. Should have had more variety. Another different subject that was excellent was "These Are The Damned."

This film has absolutely stunning sets, lights and cinematography!

As a film it's a typical Hammer film for the era, with a very predictable plot and all, but at the same time, I love watching these.

The Gorgon is often thought to mark the end of the 'classic' Hammer. I don't know about that really, but it's a good one alright.

My favourite Hammer film would have to be The Mummy (Fisher, 1959). It just has all elements right. Well, I suppose adding Barbara Shelley to the cast would have made it even more enjoyable.

Second place goes to Quatermass and the Pit (Baker, 1967). Perhaps the most underrated sci-fi film I've seen. The climax and ending is just superb. Even the shoddiness of some of the footage (avoiding spoilers here) can't ruin the film.

Third? Let's say the first Dracula film (Fisher, 1958). It's magical.

I think The Gorgon is fast growing in popularity as an unusual one-off whereas the Dracula and Frankenstein characters came in a series of films. To call The Gorgon the best Hammer film may sound a bit strong but it really is up there among the front runners for that title.

I like The Gorgon , it has lots of atmosphere . It's main problem for me , is that it is a bit cluttered with characters and plot developments, rather like there are two different stories working here. Vampire Circus was the same , in that case the outline of two planned screenplays were combined .

I actually enjoy that hodge podge of a plot. It keeps the film on the move and full of interest. Great atmosphere as you say.

Yes. Good idea. Bring these type of movies back into theaters during Halloween week. They could do good business roundabout this time of the year.

reply

This was indeed top example of Hammer´s ability to create wonderful Gothic atmosphere! Rich, moody color and sets, exquisite to look and enjoy.

reply

It was an okay movie but I can't see anything ever beating the Dracula films for me.

reply

Agreed. The Dracula cycle, The Mummy, Hound of Baskervilles, Scream of Fear all beat this easily. It's OK but does not measure up to those.

reply

I would say that Horror of Dracula was my favorite Hammer film. The 2nd one would be Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed.
