Frank Sutton is King !!!

That show goes nowhere without Frank Sutton.
Sgt. Carter was the funny one, sure Nabors was talented as
was important but think about it most of the time your
laughing at Sgt. Carter getting mad.
If you remember Andy Griffith was suppose to be the funny one
and after the first episode he knew he couldn't compete with
the great Don Knotts.

Frank was great as Sgt. Carter. A shame he died at such a young age. Don Knotts? Well, what can you say about the character known as Barney Fife? One of the greatest in television history! I don't watch Andy Griffith unless Barney is on.

reply

Indeed, Frank Sutton is King. Nothing left to say.

reply

yep, i gotta agree, the best part was when sgt. carter was fussing at gomer.

reply

Yep they were a team, and didn't know it.
Perfect ying yang there.
Sometimes it was even funnier than Gilligan/Skipper,
can't believe I just wrote that!

Frank Sutton was a GREAT Sgt. Charter. His reactions are priceless.

I was about 10 when Frank Sutton died, heck I probably hadn't even seen a GPUSMC show in syndication yet. When I started watching it as a kid I instantly knew Sgt. Carter was the funniest. He stole the show.

reply

Sgt. Carter was a lot like Barney Fife, in some ways.

Jim Nabors and Frank Sutton were just a terrific team. I remember reading somewhere that after Gomer Pyle went off the air and Jim Nabors' variety show came on, the network bigwigs wanted Jim to drop Frank Sutton from the show. To Jim's credit he refused to do so. He knew Frank Sutton was a talented actor and comedian and added to the variety show as much as he had as Sgt. Carter on Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.
