Gomer the CHARACTER was of low mentality.

GOMER the ACTOR (Jim Nabors) was a VERY TALENTED singer and actor, playing various roles from comic to serious. He was a very good singer too. Absolutly nothing of the "gomer Pyle" character he plays in GP-USMC

reply

Not only was he a dolt, I think he was infatuated with Sgt. Carter.
It's evident even in the opening credits: Notice his satisfied grin as
Carter is screaming in his face. Pyle was apparently one of the many
sitcom characters who had to stay in the closet during the years before
openly gay characters were permitted on TV (Dr. Smith of "Lost in Space"
was another; also, possibly, "Thing" on "The Addams Family.")

reply

Thanks. You made me laugh.

reply

I think Pyle simply idolized the sarge, but I wouldn't say he was 'infatuated' with him...ugh...

reply

Sort of like Smithers idolizes Mr. Burns?

Clinically, the IQ must be below 70 to be considered "retarded," and I wouldn't think Gomer's to be that low. Maybe his is 70-80, that would make him "borderline retarded," if over 80 then he's not, he'd just be "slow."

reply

I would say he is only a few points higher than Forrest Gump, he isn't an idiot, just incredibly naiive, and sees the good in everyone.

reply

No he wasn't "retarded", but I'm thinking the OP is. Pyle was supposed to be playing an innocent, backwoods, lovable country boy. He idolized and looked up to his Sgt and was always trying to please him. What's so hard to understand about that?

Gomer always looked happy whenever Sarge showed him any kind of attention.

reply

He's a stock character known in theater as the "naif."

Now that you mention it, most shows had naifs
despite people like me seeing it as overdone and unnecessary.
2 Broke (ass) Girls - Fakexss Paris Hilton blonde

Alice. - Mel's 3rd waitress whose name wasn't Alice or Flo.

Golden Girls - Ruth?

No, he is not retarded, he's just an idiot who doesn't know any better. See, there's difference between retarded and just plain dumb.

reply

Only if you consider kindness and gentleness to be 'retarded'. Unfortunately, our sophisticated society and the media seems to want to convince us of this.

reply

I agree. Gomer's greatest "shortcoming" wasn't a lack of intelligence so much as it was an overwhelming naivete' that led him to take everything and everyone completely at face value. The complete absence of cynicism also led him to see the best in everyone around him; including those who wished him wrong. That's what makes this show such an interesting time capsule, a character like this could never be considered believable in our present time.

Kinda sad, isn't it?

reply

I agree with you, Vidpro.

reply

Society has always placed intelligence above achievement. In addition, disregarding humanity, kindness and integrity.

reply

At least when Gomer sees something wrong, he tries to fix the problem, and he ends up succeeding where others have failed. In one military exercise, he was stuck with Sgt. Carter. Because of Gomer's rural background, he was able to find water and hunt food like quail a lot easier than Sergeant Carter so called military experience. Another time, he help out a struggling singer succeed at a nightclub and inadvently help two crooks find steady employment as resturant owners by teaching them how to cook. Those two guys were using the resturant as a front to rob a bank that was right next door to them.

Frankly, I have seen too many military and ex-military guys acting as retards. They seem to think that the Bill of Rights and the U.S. Constitution are pieces of papers to be ignore or push aside except when it comes to their own personel and professional interests both in and out of the military and then they start screaming about their rights in both documents. Pathetic!!!

This is an EXCELLENT appraisal of the show and Gomer's character; I couldn't agree with you more.

No Gomer the character was not retarded and he was not stupid or an idiot. Gomer was a little "simple minded". In other words not aware of the ways of the world outside Mayberry or inside Mayberry for that matter. Good hearted...yes but just not the sharpest knife in the droor. If you'll remember Goober on TAGS was the same way but I think he was just a shade closer to retarded. They all but said so in several episodes.

I also agree with Vidpro. I love Gomer Pyle, and love how sweet and gentle and trusting he is. I watched it for my first time a few years ago, there was a marathon on TV Land. But now I dont seem to find it. Does anyone know if it is on reruns? I have like 50,000 channels, so if it is on somewhere, I should be able to get it. Thanks guys!

Tiera, Not sure if you were aware, but CBS has started releasing the original series on DVD. The first two seasons are currently available.

He just saw way too many Godziller movies.

Most excellent! I commend you.

reply

Agreed: excellent coment!

Gomer certainly showed he wasn't too stupid in the "Marine Bandit" episode. I got a kick out of the ending of that one, where Gomer was helping an old lady who was stranded and Sgt. Carter insisted on taking over for Gomer and it was a little old lady, not a beautiful young lady like the first time around.

Actually, vidpro813, I just looked on www.amazon.com, and it seems all 5 seasons are now available. I just ordered season 2 today. Of course, I do see that your post was made almost 4 years ago. I'm glad at least that they got this whole series out on DVD in 4 or 5 years or whatever. Some of the other older series (and movies) are taking forever for DVD release.

Having a son with autism, I have felt for a long time that Gomer Pyle was a high-functioning autistic. I won't try to justify this except to say that he reminds me in many ways of my son.

BTW in those days high-functioning autistics weren't typically diagnosed as such. Usually they were just thought "odd". Possibly the character was inspired by such a person one of the writers had encountered earlier in their life.

reply

An interesting thought. Perhaps Gomer had Asperger's Syndrome, which can be viewed as a mild form of Autism.

reply

He was naive, uneducated, from a rural small-town, and extremely slow to catch on to some things. He was good-natured and caring as well. He did too many intelligent things, especially in later episodes, to be retarded, though. He was just a big, dorky, innocent goof.

reply

You guys that don't understand Gomer need to watch some more early episodes. He is innocent, doesn't have a contentious bone in his body and has a very big heart. He seemingly doesn't do well in the Marines, but his attributes always help him solve the problem in the end and make Carter look like an idiot. He only sees the best in everybody. He is wise to nature because of his small town/country upbringing. He's completely sincere about everything he says and does, which is why the dragon lady didn't throw him out on his ____. And the fact that he actually LIKES Carter for teaching him to be a good marine keeps Carter completely frustrated with him.

reply

The short answer is yes.
Naaahhhh. Just kidding.
But there would be NO WAY a real "Gomer Pyle" would be a Marine for very long.
He would be drummed out very quickly or be given a job with little responsibility and no chance of combat. I always thought, why don't they put Gomer in the motor pool because he knows how to fix cars? Why? Because that would make a dull show even duller.
Remember "Full Metal Jacket"? What does the Sgt. call Private Leonard Lawrence?
"Gomer Pyle."
That's another case where the soldier would have been drummed out of the Marines if he somehow got past the induction people. The way they portray Private Lawrence in the film IS as someone who is borderline--not smart enough or psychologically fit to be in the service.

reply

Nopers. Not retarded, just too undereducated and "countryfied" (i.e., naive). Too willing to trust and way too mouthy. He idolizes Carter because of the "I'll take care of you" speech the sgt ironically delivers during boot camp.

reply

Not retarded, Gomer was a hick from the South, (North Carolina) who wasn't the brightest bulb on the tree. I met several 'Gomer Pyle' types when I served two years in the army back in the '60s. Some had never been 'out of the backwoods' and acted just like Gomer.
