He was actually surprisingly talented in several areas and the show demonstrates that on many occasions-his singing, cooking, and mechanical abilities for example. However he WAS incredibly naive as several people have mentioned here, and he must have had an angel watching over him because it seems things usually worked in his favor at the end of every episode.

I would rather have Gomer as a neighbor than some of the idiots on this board. Gomer was naive and simple but he would give you the shirt off his back & you could trust that he'd do his best (even if he did screw up trying it).
