Why wasn't Gomer promoted?
My big question is
Why wasn't Gomer ever promoted to a higher rank than private?

1. He was promoted during the show -- to PFC (Private First Class)
2. It was only a TV show.
Rank doesn't come quickly in the Marines. Duke did make some degree of corporal during the series.
sharebecause.... it....was....a....TV SHOW!!!!!
shareHave you watched an episode? Anybody that stupid would be lucky to stay in the service!
shareHe never did his MCIs...
shareMost likely because in the fantasy world of television the writers of the series thought it best to keep him as a private.
shareMaybe they should have just ignored the passage of time and never mention how long he'd been in the corps.
Nowadays they'd have him moving up the ranks and assuming greater responsibilities, yet somehow Carter would always remain his superior. Eventually they'd leave the Marines and go into business together. Thankfully, Jim Nabors knew when to quit.
It would have been fun to see a finale episode, though, where they wrap up the series. But where could they go other than to have Carter think he'd gotten rid of Pyle once and for all, only to have him return like a bad penny? They'd already done that in several episodes (a frequent quibble is that Pyle's drill instructor never would have remained as his platoon sergeant, but I think they explained it by having him put in for a transfer, never anticipating he'd get stuck with Pyle).
I think the series lasted three years or there abouts in the timeline of the show. I think it was Season 4 where Gomer was reupping after his first hitch was concluding which should have been 2 years. GP:USMC probably ran a season too long but still had some quality to it while other series chugged right along many years after they should have stopped.
sharethere was a final episode..in it carter could've finally gotten rid of pyle but showing carter's soft side he tore up gomer's papers and gomer remained with carter...last scene i believe is carter yelling at gomer and gomer smiling ear to ear...carter really made the show
