Endora And Samantha’s Relationship

It’s been alluded to that Endora and Samantha globetrotted before Samantha got “tied down” with Darrin.

Endora would say how wonderful it was before. I’m wondering if this was truly the case with Samantha.

I’m thinking that Endora was a control freak and Samantha just went along to placate her. She may have felt bad because her mother and father weren’t living together and she just went to keep Endora company. I don’t remember Endora talking about having any friends.

I don’t see much affection between Samantha and her mother but when Samantha’s father visits she is genuinely excited to see him.

And I know you don’t go by names but I always found it odd that Samantha called her father the affectionate term of “daddy” but Endora was always the respectful “mother”.

Samantha was daddy’s girl.

It seemed to me that Sam and her mother had a good relationship, at least when it was on Endora's terms!

In the first few seasons the two women lunch in Paris and Tokyo. They talk about the fun they "used" to have before Sam got married. At least that's what Endora talked about a lot. She seemed to have her daughter tied to her apron strings and didn't relish giving up control.

Many parents don't like the idea of being "replaced" by a spouse. It was even harder for Endora when she was replaced by a mortal!

Endora did lead a very active social life. But she could not seem to give up control or accept that her daughter was now married and she, Endora, was not number one in her life anymore.

I think Endora's issue was that she was honestly confused why Samantha chose a mortal--and 'their' customs when she could have had anybody and anything in the world because of being a witch. That is what frustrated her.

But for all her power, Endora never just vanished Darren period--which I am presuming she could have done. Or simply removed the marriage/reversed time. Or killed Darren.

Privately I think some part of her DID like that her daughter was happy. Admitting Samantha was gennuinely happy would require being nice to a mortal--something she had believed was beneath her. She was conflicted by this and had problems working through it.

Her conflict grew when tabbitha and adam were born because they were also a part of Samantha--and her too. She could not just ignore them.

Just watched The Crone of Cawdor the other day. By that time it seemed like Endora has really accepted that Samantha loved Darrin. Or why did she step in and tell Sam that Darrin was in big trouble?

She could have kept quiet and allowed the Crone to kiss him and steal his youth. I don’t know if that would have meant that Darrin would die or would just age tremendously. Either way, Endora saved him from a terrible fate.

Samantha had an outwardly warmer relationship with her father because Maurice, for the most part, left Sam and Darrin alone. He had an outside life, devoted to the theater. His life was barely disrupted by the marriage, as he rarely visited his daughter. Endora, on the other hand, lost hundreds of years socializing with her daughter, so her constant interruptions forced Samantha to create - or at least attempt to create - more boundaries. "Mother" indeed.
